idlerat brought up the Creole word by saying it had a known etymology from an African language, but to be fair, that doesn't preclude influence from English. Creole languages develop in the first place (in their early pidgin phase) due to contact between speakers who are trying to understand each other, so it would be sensible to adopt a word that suggested its meaning to both Africans and Brits/Americans.
