My take on this is that he was probably in the Great Hall practicing his thousand-yard stare and waiting for Harry to show up, and when he didn't, he started poking around trying to find out where he and Ron were. I'm not sure if there's any indication as to when the Evening Prophet is published - maybe Snape saw in the paper that the car had been spotted.
I definitely think that Snape was watching for him, though, as he's completely obsessed with Harry and likes to have him within his line of vision whenever possible.
BTW, I'm really enjoying these discussions. They've really added to my appreciation of the books. Thanks!
