Soloing elites in Stranglethorn Vale.

Those of you who have been following the GLBT guild debacle may be interested to know that Blizzard has finally apologized for the incident. Woot! It's a start, at least.

It seems like there's been a lot of interest in WoW lately -- or at least, several people have asked me things about it. And it occurred to me that while I've posted a lot of clips and screenshots of me screwing around and doing special events, I had never posted about actually playing the game.

If you're not one of the people from whom this interest comes, forgive me. Scroll away! :D

Today I solo'd Tethis, a 43 elite raptor in Stranglethorn Vale, as a 42 hunter with a 41 pet. I didn't use any potions or special buffs. It did take several tries before I made it work, but I'm sort of a noob to begin with, so I was pretty happy that I managed it. ^_^

First, I cleared the area of all the extraneous smaller raptors. Then I pulled the big guy through a fire trap, put my pet on him, backed up and started shooting. (He did get in one hit on me. Ow, raptor fangs!)

When my pet was getting low on health, I ran up and feared Tethis, and used the time to bandage.

By the time he came back at me, my doggie was healed enough for it not to be necessary to fear and bandage a second time, as I'd thought I would have to. Tethis went down with my pet at 20% health.

Johnny, roll that sweet sweet elite raptor footage!

Video clip of the fight (2 minutes, 8mb, WMV format).

It might have been possible to do this if he wasn't a beast (ie, without fearing), if I'd foregone the fire trap and set a freeze trap at the beginning of the fight instead, and then pulled him into it when my pet was getting low. I always have a hard time taking back aggro once my pet has it, though, so using fear seemed better.

The real reason I wanted to try this was to warm up for soloing King Bangalash, another 43 elite. This guy spawns two 33 guards when he's at 50% health. I really think I can solo him with fears and traps, but every time I try, one of those stealth panthers spawns on top of me and screws it up. Gah.

While I was practicing on King B earlier, a whole party of Alliance came by to take him down. They had a 42 paladin tanking, plus a warrior, a druid, a rogue, and a priest all in their 30s, and they still almost wiped. Made me feel less lame for not being able to solo him yet. :D

Unrelatedly, [livejournal.com profile] languagelog has a post about Torino vs. Turin for those who were curious about why one may be used over the other. (Attn [livejournal.com profile] tekalynn!)
