amiu - millefiori

For [livejournal.com profile] millefiori:

maong ény "millefiori"

X-SAMPA: [ m{O_(drop)N eny ]

Millefiori is an Italian term referring to a type of glass or ceramic design, but I've translated the literal meaning: a thousand flowers.

The first sign (reading right to left) is a pictogram of a flower (maong) hanging from a vine, and the second is the numeral 512.

The Amíu number system is base-8. Eight to the third power (512 in base-10) is often used as an indeterminate large quantity, as here. If I'd wanted literally 1000, it would look like this:

The numbers work something like Roman numerals -- they don't use a place value system. A right slash represents 1; a leaf represents 8; vertically stacked leaves represent successive powers of 8. A stack of two leaves is 8*8=64; a stack of three leaves is 8*8*8=512. Each left slash below a stack adds another instance of that power. Three left slashes are allowed before another column begins. So, in the example above:

8*8*8=512
(8*8)*4=256
(8*8)*3=192
8*4=32
8

512+256+192+32+8=1000

Some of the words for the numbers are based on the process of counting on one's toes (of which the Lúen have eight). One is muin "toe", four is "foot", eight is Lén"feet". By coincidence, Lén also means "leaf", hence the written form.

Next up for an icon is [livejournal.com profile] keladryb. I know it's been a while, but I will get to everyone. The rest of the icon queue is [livejournal.com profile] ruhgozler, [livejournal.com profile] asphodeline, [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie, and [livejournal.com profile] _hannelore. ([livejournal.com profile] lolaraincoat's on my list too, but she asked for something longer, which I've been working on intermittently.)

I'm always open for more requests, and of course for questions and comments.

My suggestion!

Got it. Should be an interesting challenge.

(By the way, somehow I started watching Inu Yasha, and it's become a real guilty pleasure. It's just so *charming*! I know it's a favorite of yours, so I just thought I'd mention it. *g*)

HEHEHEHEHEHEH.

I've been following it for nearly five years now. ^n.n^b IT really does suck you in, ya know. Ah well; if you ever want some fansubs (as the english dub is terrible and very inaccurate) lemme know! :D

I haven't found the dub all that bad, at least not in terms of the acting (of course, I don't know about the accuracy). At least, I've heard a whole lot worse. *g*

Base 8 is tingly. At first I was going to do base 18, but somehow the plan changed.
