It helps that the written forms of the Romance languages are more similar to each other than they sound when spoken. French tends to have a lot of silent letters, which provide useful clues when you're reading or trying to guess what a word means. (It's a double edged sword, of course, when you're trying to remember how a word you know by sound is spelled!)
