He'd have been sexist as well as racist if he'd called her "Mudblood c*nt" or something along those lines. At that point, he's being a fairly unpleasant young man from the mid '70s, but not noticeably worse than his opponents.

Oh, he does. But is it because she's Muggleborn, because she's Harry's friend, or because she's an compulsive swot (just like he was)? After all, he doesn't seem to *like* any students but the Slytherins, and he actively attacks Neville, who is as pureblooded as one could wish.

It might be Snape is just attacking her because he's found her weak spots, and because he *can*.

I suspect he's still a wizardly isolationist (but that makes him mainstream as far as the Wizarding World goes), and works with Dumbledore because he thinks that Voldemort's *methods* are endangering the culture he cares about more than anything else Dumbledore has yet done will.
