President Kerry needs to be able to get things done, and for that, he needs as big a win as he can get.
Tucker Carlson, of all people, who supports Bush but expects a Kerry win, said today in the Washington Post [I'm paraphrasing] that "we need a President with a 51% mandate." Clinton never got above 50% thanks to Perot, and Bush, of course fell a bit short . . . . So I totally agree with you, I think it would make a huge difference in overcoming some polarization that's just been building over the last several elections.
BTW, I did my bit for Kerry in Virginia, thinking about that issue. (Though also about the fact that we're suddenly a competitive state in some polls, which is extremely cool.)
