[personal profile] maidenjedi asked questions #5 & #15 about Oil, an X-Files genfic from the POV of the black oil alien, written in 2003.

5: What part was hardest to write?

I remember going through many revisions of the last few paragraphs. Knowing what note to end a story on is critical, and since this fic is so weird it wasn't easy. Some of the obvious choices for thoughts to end on wouldn't have worked. The main character as we've known it essentially ceases to exist by choosing to give up its individuality, but doesn't die. There's no concern for what happens to Krycek because in this POV humans are not very relatable. The alien doesn't end up caring much about those things. What stirs its emotions is something we don't consider a "being" but more of a process — Earth's water cycle — because the alien also exists as a process, so it feels kinship there. I considered that the heart of the story and wanted to leave the reader thinking so too, but I had a hard time putting it into words in the way I wanted, and was repeatedly told by beta readers to stop overexplaining and trust that readers would get it. As usual, they were right.

15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

A lot. I had so much less experience in writing at this point that I was still improving by leaps and bounds with every attempt. I remember [livejournal.com profile] bardsmaid patiently explaining how less can be more — how too many details are cluttering instead of clarifying. This took time to come to grips with ("what, you mean I have to take whole sentences out? but I just wrote those!") but became key to my writing style and process.

It was also a lesson in not being too wedded to early ideas or too proud to change them. The story actually has its roots in a piece of original fiction I wrote to Keladry's offhand prompt "The Life and Times of a Cherry Coke", which explored the concept of what it would feel like to exist as a liquid. I actually submitted the story to some literary magazines that published oddball stuff and was turned down. Fortunately I was able to overcome my dented ego enough to have the thought that maybe the story didn't work, but elements of it could still be salvaged and made into something better, and eventually that grew into "Oil".

The reason "Oil" works where the Cherry Coke story didn't is that intriguing concepts and pretty descriptions alone weren't enough; they needed a compelling character and situation, and something at stake. The oilien storyline in XF met that need perfectly and gave my earlier ideas direction, and to follow that direction I had to give up my attachment to something I'd already worked on to the point of submitting it profesionally, and be willing to basically start over. We all know you're supposed to kill your darlings, but I think this marked a turning point for me in putting that advice into practice.

More to come! If you want to check out the rest of the questions or pose one of your own, the original meme post is here.

[personal profile] gracerene asked question #10 about Heat Wave, a Sirius/James fic from 2005. (And yes, actually remembering the writing process might be tough on some of these, but I'll try!)

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

It was for a fest and the pairing was specified in the prompt ("Sirius/James, Dom!Sirius, bondage, drawnout pleasure until James can't take it anymore. Playful, cocky, smirking Sirius"), so why did I choose this prompt?

I got interested in James/Sirius after OotP, which really shifted my mental image of the Maurauders. Since PoA there had been a fannish assumption, which I shared, that Sirius and Remus were the closest friends (possibly already in a relationship), and James was the leader. To me, OotP changed all that. It seemed clear to me that Sirius and James were the ones who were close, both from the way they interacted in the flashback and the fact that Sirius went to live with the Potters; his living with Remus or Peter was apparently never even considered. I also realized that Sirius was more of a leader type than I'd thought, and that to some extent James was taking cues from him, which makes the way the Prank played out make a lot of sense.

In light of all this, pairing them up began to seem a lot more interesting. I know I'd already started to write some J/S fic but hadn't gotten very far, and seeing this prompt was serendipitous since it gave some specific direction to stuff that was on my mind but still kind of nebulous. If the prompt had been Dom!James I doubt I would have taken it, because what I wanted to write about had to do with Sirius having the dominant role in their friendship and that dynamic progressing into a sexual relationship. Sirius feels like James will follow him anywhere and keeps pushing it further, and this prompt fit that concept perfectly.

And I mean, yes, I know it's a PWP and maybe I wasn't completely successful in getting all this background out onto the page. But it's what I had in mind when writing. There's still a small part of me that thinks I'm going to finish the other fic in this universe that I started on, because there's more I wanted to say about this pairing and what I thought would happen as they got older and realized there might be places they weren't comfortable going with it, not sexually but emotionally. (I remember an astute reader commenting with distress that they never kiss... There's a reason I wrote it that way.)

Anyway, that's one down. I'll have to get to the rest of these another day! And if you want to check out the rest of the questions or pose one of your own, the original meme post is here.

It's been a joy to see so many people popping up and posting for the first time in a while, despite the less than optimal circumstances. I've been adding or adding back anyone whose name I recognize and/or who appears to be in fandom, and trying to comment a bit more than in the past. I'll try to be better about posting, too. Here, look: A post!

But posts about posting, while perhaps better than silence, may not be the best at holding people's interest. To get me going, would anyone like to try out this meme I saw at [personal profile] maidenjedi's place?

Pick a story of mine, choose a question from below, I will answer.

My stories.

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
2: What scene did you first put down?
3: What's your favorite line of narration?
4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?
5: What part was hardest to write?
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
7: Where did the title come from?
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
11: What do you like best about this fic?
12: What do you like least about this fic?
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn't listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

And in other news, I wrote another [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant fest fill, just a quick little thing:

Love Letter (R, Ginny/Luna)
Prompt from [insanejournal.com profile] carpemermaid: Character A likes to pet and stroke and tease Character B while they sit in their lap.

I wrote a thing for the [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant 11th birthday comment fest:

Once (R, James Sirius/Lily Luna)
Prompt from [insanejournal.com profile] tryslora: It'll be okay, just this once, right?

You too can fill prompts, or read fills, or whatever floats your boat!

I still haven't finished reading all the Kinky Kristmas fics that were posted while I was out of town, but I can at least point to my own entry:

Nine Ways of Looking at a Book (R, Hermione/Minerva) [AO3]
Hermione has come back to Hogwarts to teach history. She finds herself looking to the future, too.

Now, this is a double-blind fest in which you don't know whose prompt you're picking, but how I didn't guess I was writing for [personal profile] kelly_chambliss based on the characters and kinks, the world will never know! I never got around to prompting anything and I wasn't sure I was going to write either, but come on now... Hermione/Minerva with book kink? How am I going to pass that up? :D

What a great [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween it was this year!

I got this sweet & lovely drabble from my sweet & lovely wife:

The Moon And I (PG, Luna/Hermione) by [livejournal.com profile] _hannelore

And I had the privilege of writing again for my friend [livejournal.com profile] dexstarr:

The Fall (G, Narcissa, Andromeda) [AO3]

I would encourage anyone who has some time to check out the entries if they haven't. Since they're all double drabbles it doesn't take long, and there are some real gems. Every year I'm amazed at the depth and beauty writers are able to pull off in 200 words.

The masterlist for [livejournal.com profile] severus_snape's annual fest is up! I wrote this ficlet:

By Now Should Be Antique (G, Filch & Snape) [AO3]
Argus doesn't know where Snape comes from anymore.

It's just a little thing, but I was pleased to be able to contribute. ♥

A shamefully long time ago, I received this lovely gift in the [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween drabble exchange:

Carry My Soul Into The Night (PG-13, Narcissa) by [livejournal.com profile] flyingharmony

It's great and just what I wanted, and I'm so sorry I didn't point to it until now! Better late than never?

As for me, I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] reynardo:

Red Ribbon (G, Hermione & kids) [AO3]

Do read it on AO3 if you read it, since a typo somehow made its way into the LJ version. >_<

In more current news, [livejournal.com profile] severus_snape's annual fest starts posting on the 9th (naturally), and I've got an entry in there. And claiming has started at [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest, which I hope to participate in, health permitting and all.

How are you all doing? I try to stay positive but life doesn't make it easy some days, does it?

That AMA day was great. I loved reading everyone's questions and answers, and I keep going back to people's entries to find more. :D

I have one question left over that I didn't get to, from [livejournal.com profile] nearlyconscious: What's the fic you wrote that you like the most, and why?

This was hard to answer, mostly because it feels like bragging, and because I am actually pretty self-critical and have a difficult time liking my own writing. (It would have been easier to come up with the fics that I was the most disappointed in, but I'm not nearly enough of a masochist to make that post.) I don't think I can narrow it down to just one — I have posted almost 150 fics over 13 years, after all — but I'll name a few that come to mind, in no particular order

Five fics of mine that I like )

If any of you would like to take on the same question, I'd be fascinated to read the answers. What are your favorite fanworks that you've created, and what makes them stand out above the rest?

The Salt & Pepper fest master list is up! I wrote:

But Not Narrow (PG-13, Hermione/Ron, Hugo/OMC) [AO3]
Naturally, Hermione is completely supportive when Hugo comes out of the closet. It's a bit more of a surprise when Hugo returns the favour.

I loved writing this. The prompt, from [livejournal.com profile] sdkshelly, was about a middle-aged Hermione figuring out that she is not straight, a concept that I was instantly drawn to. There were so many ways to go with it that I was actually a little overwhelmed at first and had a hard time settling on just one idea. But when I found the right one, the story just seemed to write itself, which is extremely atypical for my writing process, and was a pleasant change. :P

Meanwhile, I am sick as a dog, and have been for over a week. I keep thinking I'm getting better, and then it's like... nope, not even close. I can't really complain too much, because since I quit working in retail I get sick very rarely (money and people are filthy, it turns out) but I'm certainly looking forward to feeling better soon. :\

Happy Valentine's Day! My second entry for [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest wasn't intended as a V-day fic, but it fits well enough:

Pink (R, Neville/Luna) [AO3]
Luna's cheeks are pink. So are other things.

Unrelatedly (though rather appropriate for a Luna post), random browsing brought me to the Deviant Art page of someone who makes the most amazing handmade plushies of fantasy creatures: Wood Splitter Lee's Original Fantasy Sculptures. Her creations have to be seen to be believed. Don't get your hopes up for seeing one in person, though... they're one of a kind and often auction for upwards of a thousand dollars. :o

Now that [livejournal.com profile] severus_fest reveals have happened, I can say that I wrote:

Unbreakable (R, Severus/Narcissa) [AO3]
When Narcissa left Spinner's End that night, she was not in Severus's debt.

I was somewhat unsure about this fic when I submitted it (I knew where I was trying to go with it, but wasn't certain it would come across), so I have to say I was really tickled to watch folks discussing it during the anonymity period and coming up with many of the same ideas for Severus's motivations that I'd had in mind, as well as some I hadn't even thought of. Snape just wouldn't be Snape without a dozen different possible reasons for what he does, would he?

This was a fun fest to write for and there were a lot of great entries. Check them out!

Posting has started at [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest (yaaaaaay), and my entry is up:

Rest Your Head Close to My Heart (R, Harry/Hermione) [AO3]
It's almost time to wean her last child, and Hermione is thinking about what she's losing. Meanwhile, Harry is thinking about what he never had.
content: Lactation kink, adult nursing, non-sexual ageplay, epilogue-compliant fidelity issues (i.e. Harry and Hermione are both married, and not to each other)

I might just go ahead and make it my mission to travel the fandom as a kink-knight-errant, filling all the ageplay prompts in every fest. That's cool with everybody, right?

The title's from this (worksafe video, unless your boss doesn't like to see you crying at your desk).

And now that reveals have happened for all the fics I wrote in 2014, here they are!

Harry Potter )

Star Trek )

The Venture Bros. )

And OMG only three days until more Venture Bros. Anyone else watch this show? I've been a fan since the first season but I feel like I might have posted about it... never?? It's one of those things where I love it almost too much to write fic. After an episode I just sit there like, welp, I sure can't write any better than that, so...

Anyway, I wrote a bit less this year than last year, but I feel good about the quality of most of it, and there were several things that I'd wanted to write for a long time but the right opportunity hadn't come up before. (Yay, I finally got to write Guinan/Ro!) I was especially proud of Two Can Keep a Secret, and apparently others liked it too because it seems it won its category in [livejournal.com profile] hpfanficfanpoll. Awards can only be taken seriously up to a point, since of course they are subjective, but I do thank those who took the time to nominate or vote for my story, and congratulate everyone who was in the running. :)

I think 2015 is going to be awesome. No reason really, just a feeling.

Kinky Kristmas reveals are up and I am filled with shame at how little I managed to read before disappearing into the holidays. :| Well, at least the fics aren't going anywhere, right?

My two lovely gifts were written by [personal profile] tjs_whatnot (Forever and Always) and [livejournal.com profile] dexstarr (Sin and Salt). Thank you both very, very much. ♥

Now, Kinky Kristmas is a double-blind fest where you don't know who you're writing for, and yet I have managed to pick [personal profile] songquake's prompts two years in a row. We are clearly on the same wavelength in a wonderful way. :)

I wrote:

Theme and Variations (NC-17, Padma/Lavender) [AO3]
"Ready?" Padma asks with a raised eyebrow, sliding her belt out from the loops of her jeans.
content: Daddy kink, ageplay, gender play, D/s, spanking, dirty talk

Um... my id is showing, isn't it? I really like gender play, and I really like Daddy kink when Daddy is a girl, but it's not such a common thing in fandom. I am happy to contribute to there being more of it. >:D

Aaaaaand posting has started at [livejournal.com profile] severus_fest where I'll have a fic going up at some point, and of course I haven't managed to read anything yet, but OMG did you guys see this amazing art that was posted for it?

Snapebastian (PG-13, Snape, worksafe) by Mystery Artist

Brilliant take on Snape as St. Sebastian, with very insightful use of the traditional imagery.

And now to put together a 2014 roundup post, and then contemplate how the hell I managed to sign myself up for so much that is due in January and February. /o\

All right, time for [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween, before I get too ridiculously late with it. First off, [livejournal.com profile] kellychambliss and I wrote for each other, and boy was I nervous. I respect her writing a hell of a lot and I think I know her tastes fairly well, so I really wanted to get it right. I hope I did.

The Margin (G, Minerva & all the Heads of House) by me
After the children are asleep, the Heads of House have their own Samhain ritual.

And then her drabble for me! Oh man.

Chromatic (G, The Grey Lady & Luna) by [livejournal.com profile] kellychambliss
Every year, the Grey Lady waits for Samhain.

I can't even say how happy this made me. I've been throwing prompts about Luna and the Grey Lady into different fests for years, and in 200 words she managed to make it everything I wanted, and more complete and satisfying than some stories that are ten times the wordcount.

As usual, there were many excellent entries. Here are a few others that particularly stood out to me:

The Dark )

The Sexy )

The Sweet )

The Funny )

After the last thing I wrote, I kind of wanted to do something light and silly, so I smushed together some prompts from [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant and [livejournal.com profile] hp_het_taboo and made this:

The Lovely Harpy's Bite (NC-17, Albus Severus Potter/Luna Lovegood) [LJ] [AO3]
An eminent magizoologist comes to Hogwarts to give a talk to the N.E.W.T level Care of Magical Creatures class. There's something very different about her, and Al can't take his mind off it.
content: underage sexuality (16), featherplay, wingfic (yes, really)

[livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween roundup soon!

I wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] hp_het_taboo:

Two Can Keep a Secret (NC-17, Fred/Ginny, canon-compliant Harry/Ginny) [AO3]
Ten years after Fred's death, Ginny looks back on the secret they shared.

I want to emphasize here that that this is a story about abuse, and not a fun incest romp. Romps are good too (I've certainly written my share), I just don't want anybody to skim the headers and think this is one.

a few comments about why I wrote this (mentions of RL abuse) )

Anyway, this is shaping up to be a busy end to 2014. I've got a [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant fic to write for October and [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween due on the same day, Kinky Kristmas due in November, [livejournal.com profile] severus_fest in December... so, yeah, probably not signing up for Yuletide this year. Treating is more fun anyway, IMO!

Now that [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder's final (*sob*) masterlist has been posted, I can say that my wonderful gift was written by [insanejournal.com profile] evensong14. Thank you! I've also added author names to my recs post.

I wrote:

The Ten Month Career of Professor R. J. Lupin (PG-13, Lupin/McGonagall, Snape/McGonagall) [AO3]
Remus tells himself again and again: He is not still in love with Minerva McGonagall.

It's a bummer that this was the last year for Beholder, though it's not entirely surprising. With the fandom less active overall, it's got to be difficult to maintain enough interest in rarepair fests, especially exchanges. I'm glad I participated this year, not knowing it was the last. I'd have been very sad if I hadn't.
