Today's topic was suggested by [personal profile] implicated2, who wrote: Would you be interested in doing some fic rec posts? I often enjoy posts that do something like "here is a theme I really enjoy in fic and here are some fics that do it well/interestingly."

Since it's on my mind already given yesterday's post, how about some stories where characters are shown navigating their kinks?

Doll (HP, Draco/Hermione, NC-17) by [livejournal.com profile] captainraychill
kink: attraction to dolls/sex with living dolls
I recced this before when it was new, and it's well worth reccing again. It's a powerful, insightful exploration of how early experiences shape our desires, of how crucial a part of our identity our kinks can be, of the intimacy of negotiation, and of the fear that Hermione puts so clearly: "I want to find everything I need in one person, but I don’t know if I can." The use of magic in this fic is particularly wonderful and adds to the depth and feeling of immersiveness.

Reproach (HP, Snape/Black, worksafe comic) by [livejournal.com profile] akatnamedeaster
kinks: nonsexual ageplay, crossdressing
For anyone unfamiliar with Kat's work, this takes place in an AU where Sirius and Severus survived the war and are in an established relationship. There's a disarming simplicity and openness to the images of Sirius soothing himself with his secret kink — it really feels like we are peeking in on a private moment, rather than something intentionally displayed, which speaks to the subtlety of Kat's drawings. It rings true that even in an established kinky partnership, there can be things that feel especially personal and scary to share.

perfect in a sickening sort of way (Star Trek Reboot RPF, Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto, NC-17) by [archiveofourown.org profile] perdiccas
kink: rape fantasy
It doesn't matter if you don't know who these actors are; everything you need to know is in the fic. This is an intense story that is very perceptive about the realities of fulfilling a taboo fantasy. There is a constant awareness of how high the emotional stakes are, the risks that are present no matter how well you negotiate, and the depth of trust it takes to step into it anyway. It's rare to see these themes handled so deftly, and I found it incredibly hot.

And wow, May's half over already. I'm doing a lot better at this post-every-day thing than I thought I would!

[livejournal.com profile] hp_goldenage has started posting for their Salt & Pepper fest (fic/art of all genres focusing on characters over 50), and one of the entries will be mine!

Uh, I think I'm signed up for [livejournal.com profile] hd_collab? All I know is [personal profile] hannelore asked me if I'd be on a team with her and I said "sure". Anyway, sign-ups still seem to be open for that.

And I'm a week late with this, but rest in peace, Leonard Nimoy. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. The heart and soul you put into Spock watered the creative ground from which all of our fandoms have grown, and continue to grow.

And now that reveals have happened for all the fics I wrote in 2014, here they are!

Harry Potter )

Star Trek )

The Venture Bros. )

And OMG only three days until more Venture Bros. Anyone else watch this show? I've been a fan since the first season but I feel like I might have posted about it... never?? It's one of those things where I love it almost too much to write fic. After an episode I just sit there like, welp, I sure can't write any better than that, so...

Anyway, I wrote a bit less this year than last year, but I feel good about the quality of most of it, and there were several things that I'd wanted to write for a long time but the right opportunity hadn't come up before. (Yay, I finally got to write Guinan/Ro!) I was especially proud of Two Can Keep a Secret, and apparently others liked it too because it seems it won its category in [livejournal.com profile] hpfanficfanpoll. Awards can only be taken seriously up to a point, since of course they are subjective, but I do thank those who took the time to nominate or vote for my story, and congratulate everyone who was in the running. :)

I think 2015 is going to be awesome. No reason really, just a feeling.

Some things I've been enjoying over the past, er... more than a month. I'm no good at that insta-rec thing some people seem to be able to do.

ST:TNG fic: New Days (G, Deanna-centric ensemble fic) by [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin
Post-Ethics AU. Following Worf's death, Deanna struggles with her promise to raise Alexander.

It's rare to read a story that understands grief this well — not just the emotions, but also how families and communities reorganize themselves around the empty space where the person once was.

HP fic: Haunted (R, Lily/Sirius, Lily/James, implied Sirius/James) by [livejournal.com profile] writcraft
Dead or alive, Sirius Black has always haunted Lily.

A beautiful and delicate look at the complexities of this triad, both before and after death.

HP art: Rat (worksafe, Padfoot) by [livejournal.com profile] akatnamedeaster
In his dreams, he always catches him in the end.

All the more powerful for its stark simplicity.

HP silly thing: HP Quotes Taken Out of Context (worksafe) [no creator credited]

And on a completely different note, if you need a laugh after those three rather serious fanworks, indulge your inner 12-year-old with this! If anyone needs me, I'll be on all fours in Snape's office.

[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen posting day is here!

I didn't sign up this year because I "didn't have time", and I also assured myself I wasn't going to be pinch hitting, and was only reading the emails from the pinch hitter mailing list out of curiosity.

That said, I wrote this pinch hit for [livejournal.com profile] jacquelee:

The Telling Stone (ST:TNG, Teen, Guinan/Ro Laren)
Guinan's father lives at the straggling edge of the Alpha Quadrant, as far as he can get from the remains of their homeworld without leaving the galaxy, on a lonely desert moon.

And now to read stuff. :D

It's 15 days too late for this, which is just about how behind I am on everything else at this point, so at least I'm consistent? /o\

I wrote a lot of fic this past year, mostly for fests. Well... all for fests, actually, or at least for things with deadlines. Not coincidental, that. Towards the end of the year I bit off more than I could chew and did have to drop out of one fest, which was a first for me, and a bummer. Next year, more realistic scheduling! But according to AO3, I wrote about 30,000 words in 2013, which is a bit more than in any past year, including years in which my fandoms were much more active.

Harry Potter )

Star Trek )

Warcraft )

I'm going to be bold and say that most of these were solid stories that I'm proud of. It was flattering and encouraging this year to be invited to write at [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant and to win/place in a couple of categories at [livejournal.com profile] hpfanficfanpoll. I hope this doesn't sound stupid or vain, but what I really want out of writing is to give other people enjoyment, and when I meet that goal it makes me happy.

Onward!

Oh man, I haven't posted in a while, have I? Real life was doing a number on me, not in a bad way, just in a busy way. I am going to get to all those December meme prompts, too, but first... the Kinky Kristmas reveals post is up at [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant, so I can say that I wrote this, to [personal profile] songquake's delicious prompts:

Pomona Sprout and the Five Points from Hufflepuff [AO3]
(NC-17, school-age-but-probably-legal Pomona/Minerva, kinks including tickling, teasing, and embarrassment)

Speaking of which, I found an embarrassment of riches in my [community profile] fandom_stocking! There seems to be a glitch right now where I can't comment there without it being screened, but rest assured I love my gifts and deeply appreciate everyone who took the time to make something for me, including but not limited to:

- State-Transition Function by [personal profile] sineala (ST:TOS, Uhura gen with linguistics!)
- Your Move by [personal profile] moontyger (WoW, Anduin/Wrathion with UST!)
- For the Horde by [personal profile] hannelore (WoW, Thrall & Vol'jin gen with barely-subtextual D/s!)
- An Introduction by [personal profile] smallbrownfrog (HP, Luna/Minerva pre-femslash with Gilbert & Sullivan references!)
- Outstanding by [personal profile] chokolattejedi (HP, Hermione/Septima with power play!)
- Krycek and Scully art from [personal profile] ani_bester and another Krycek art from [personal profile] tarlanx! *rolls around in XF nostalgia*
- Uhura art from [personal profile] trobadora! Uhura! ♥♥♥

I really meant to do all kinds of things for this fest, but what actually happened was I signed up for it and then promptly forgot about it until the deadline had, in fact, passed. I suck, I know. Next year I'll do better. But due to the technical problems that delayed the fest going live, I managed a few icons for people, at least, and one ficlet, which is so tailored to [personal profile] hannelore's interests that it might be incomprehensible to anyone else, but here it is anyway:

The Terrible Secret of Warsong Gulch
(G, Venture Bros., 21 & 24 friendship)

[personal profile] sineala asked me to post about my favorite Star Trek episodes, which is only fair since I asked her first (though I wrote this before reading her post).

I guess first I have to define my terms. If favorite means "best", then I suspect a lot of us fans would have similar lists, and I don't disagree with the usual suspects.

But if we're going to talk about episodes that are sentimental favorites, then that turns into a different list. And perhaps a more important list, because the lasting appeal of Star Trek is pretty obviously not about it being consistently "good" by any reasonably objective standard; it's about love, and love is an illogical human feeling. So I'm going to answer this by talking about a few eps that mean something to me even if they're not the ones you'd show to a non-fan to prove that Star Trek Is Quality Television.

Memories: First, bittersweet, and happy )

You can still give me questions/topics on LJ and DW.

I wasn't signed up for [community profile] femslashex, but I picked up two pinch hits:

Opening (Explicit, ST:TNG, Tasha Yar/Deanna Troi) for [personal profile] ariestess
Tasha can read Deanna's body as well as Deanna can read her heart.
content notes: D/s play including light bondage

All Roads Lead To (Teen, HP, Cho Chang/Luna Lovegood) for [personal profile] sharpest_asp
After leaving Hogwarts, Cho isn't sure if there's a place for her anymore in the fight against Voldemort. Luna comes to convince her that there is.

Now to read! And then to work on all the holiday fest fics I need to write! /o\

Since it's the last day of [community profile] kink_bingo and the last day of Rectober (whoever decided that was a thing... I never quite figured that out), here, have some KB recs.

Harry Potter
Schoolboy Blues by [personal profile] delphi (Explicit, Snape/Filch, kink: class fantasies)
author's summary: Severus Snape knows every shortcut at St. Brutus's Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys, including a few of his own devising.
If that summary hasn't already convinced you to read this fic... well, then you're clearly not me! This is the best kind of AU, where this new way of seeing the characters lets us look into them more deeply.

Star Trek: The Original Series
Feel Fine by [personal profile] sineala (G, Spock & Kirk & McCoy, kink: emotion play)
author's summary: Spock finds that he wants to be happy.
A wonderfully thoughtful and astute portrait of Spock after the events of STIV, learning and re-learning how to navigate the space he inhabits between Vulcan and human. Just lovely.

Warcraft
Scarlet and Ivory by [personal profile] usefulobject (Mature, Interrogator Vishas, kink: torture/interrogation)
author's summary: Vishas fantasizes that deep down, those damned Forsaken really like what he does. You don't get to be Scarlet Interrogator by not being creepy.
I love how Vishas projects his own twisted thoughts onto his victims — because, of course, they're the perverted ones! This fic nails the tone of how scary things are presented in WoW, with a hint of macabre humor that lightens the grotesqueness just enough.

X-Files
Palliative by [personal profile] sineala (Mature, Krycek, kink: enemas)
author's summary: Alex Krycek deals with his oilien experiences in a unique way.
Longtime friends know that the oilien episodes hold a special fascination for me, so it was a real treat to find this post-Apocrypha fic from KB 2010. The way Krycek experiences the trauma of the possession and the way he regains his sense of control are so perfectly him.

I received an excellent gift:
Pictures in the Pavement and Magic in the Rain by [personal profile] el_staplador (G, Mary Poppins, ft. Mary, Jane, Winifred, & the Bird Woman)
It shows us more of the lives and relationships of the women in this movie in a wonderfully believable and satisfying way. It's everything I was hoping for when I asked for this fandom. You should read it!

I got matched with [personal profile] hannelore, which I knew was a possibility (it's not my fault we have similar tastes) but this year I just figured if it happens, let it happen. For her I wrote:
Deep Breath (Teen, World of Warcraft, ft. Onyxia & Lilian Voss)

Such enormity moving with such grace (G, ST:TOS, ft. Gillian Taylor)
And I wrote a treat for [livejournal.com profile] dropsofviolet:
The Thrill of the Hunt (G, ST:TNG, ft. Tasha Yar)
I'm looking forward to combing through the rest. There are some stories that look amazing from the summaries, it's just a matter of finding time to sit down and read. D:

Yes, my last post was also squeeing over a gift fic. Here is another. They are both well deserved.

Would you believe, for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen (masterlist), I actually got fic for Topsy-Turvy, a fandom so obscure that up until now it had zero fics of any kind, even in Yuletide? And would you believe that it is about my two favorite characters, and that it is so amazing I almost died of happiness? BELIEVE IT.

are you in a sentimental mood? (Teen, Jessie Bond/Leonora Braham) by [personal profile] aphrodite_mine

If you've seen the movie, go read this fic. If you haven't seen the movie, go Netflix it and then read this fic. The story is brilliant in all the same ways the movie is, and then some. It's sad and real and subtle and hopeful, and beautifully subverts our expectations of Victorian women and their lives. If we only get one fic to represent this rich source material, I am so glad it's this one.

Meanwhile, I wrote a ST:TNG fic for [personal profile] oparu:

The New Water (Teen, Beverly Crusher/Deanna Troi) by me

Stuff about this fic and participating in the exchange )

HP fic

Doll (NC-17, Draco/Hermione) by [livejournal.com profile] captainraychill. Wow. It's rare to find a fic like this, that is truly about kink instead of just including a kink. It's about early experiences shaping our desires, about the intimacy of revealing them, about negotiation and power exchange, and also about the all-too-real loneliness that sometimes comes when the person you play with isn't a person you can be with. I'm impressed. Draco's kink is dolls, and humans pretending to be dolls, and the story meticulously and lovingly expresses what's hot about that rather than assuming it's already your thing.

HP art

Formal (PG, Draco/Hermione) by [livejournal.com profile] kipre. Yay, co-ed crossdressing! There should be more of this.

DS9 art

Kira Nerys in 1940s menswear (G) by [personal profile] softestbullet. What it says on the tin. This picture makes me incoherent with glee, and can be enjoyed even if you don't know the character.

As an aside, Sarek's scenes were bittersweet. I miss Mark Lenard.

After the movie we went to KFC, because it was the only place around still open. I officially gave up fast food like 10 years ago, but I'm not so anal about it that I'll refuse to eat if it's the only thing. That stuff sure tasted better when I was a little kid.
