*nodnod* Something I was trying to get at too, but didn't quite manage to articulate, was that to him girlfriends are supposed to be drawn from the pool of Girls, not the pool of Friends. You've pegged the reason for that better than I had, though.
Something else I hadn't thought of until just now: Teenagers often don't connect the kind of dating you do as a teenager with the kind of relationships you have as an adult. Of course the two do tend to be rather different, but some teens at least seem to want things like emotional connection in their relationships, whereas I think Ron's at the stage where he doesn't see enough similarity between casual dating and life-partnership to even have the thought enter his mind that there are in-between states, and that a girlfriend might be at least a little bit more than a snogging partner.
