I think Narcissa refers to him as an old friend of Lucius, doesn't she? And Umbridge says Lucius always speaks highly of him.
Both of those things are post-fifth year, though, and could refer to Snape becoming close to Lucius while in the DEs the first time, and then later talking him up after Snape rejoined Voldemort.
Their real connection in canon has always just been that Snape is Draco's favorite teacher and Draco is Snape's favorite student. Since Snape hates Harry because of James it's easy to think he similarly likes Draco because of his relationship with his father. Draco, too, is sometimes described as being with older students, though he seems mostly a performer or a clown. Snape may have had a different way of getting the attention of older students.
