I got to work this morning and my boss had left a note saying she'd be in soon. I started doing work and stuff.
Then she called and said, "If you get any shipments, DON'T check them in." She said this in a tone as though they might contain mail bombs, so I asked what would happen if I did.
She explained that Owner had sold the business, so we shouldn't open any shipments, as it would make doing the inventory harder. It's not strange to do a physical inventory when ownership changes.
But what IS kind of fucking strange is that Owner has only owned the business for two years and it's doing fairly well. She also didn't tell ANYONE that she was considering selling. This morning she invited my boss out to coffee and dropped it on her.
It goes on: The physical inventory is happening today, and she's hired a professional inventory crew to do it, and they're coming at 2:30 so close the store before then.
So my boss and the manager of the other store arrived and we discussed how bizarre this was, and wondered what kind of person our new overlord would be, and whether we would still have jobs. It would certainly be stupid to get rid of the core staff who know how to run the stores, but we have no way of knowing whether our new overlord is stupid or not.
The best part, IMO, was the reported explanation(s) of why Owner wanted out. She told my boss that with her new baby she needed something more "flexible", which is frankly a load of shit because she already comes and goes whenever she pleases. She told the manager of the other store something completely different, which is that she never planned to own the business for more than 5 years, because she likes to "do different things". Which is kinda like "being really really flaky" I guess.
So... we left the inventory crew to do their thing, and I went home.
Still not as good as my old job, where they closed the store with no warning and laid everybody off. I suppose I am optimistic. Still: Craigslist ahoy.
