I remember how absolutely astounding The Little Mermaid was when it came out. As an anime fan, I wasn't a stranger to what can be done in animation, but I had given up on Disney. My mother and I had the same reaction of "Oh, they've gone back to the OLD style!" and feeling absolutely ecstatic.
It didn't last, but it was a nice run while we had it.
