In an ironic development, today I went to the DMV to have the gender marker on my ID changed to M. (I don't get all butthurt over having only two options and expect them to provide a free text field, because they are a faceless dystopian government entity. You see the difference.)
I put off doing this for a long time for several reasons:
- You used to have to get a court order to do it. Now they have a handy form to change one's ID. I think to have your birth certificate reissued you still have to get a court order, but I don't care to do that.
- When people check your ID, they don't actually look at it. If they have to copy down information, they only look at that part and ignore the rest. Once I got a traffic citation and the cop actually checked M on the form even though the card in his hand said F. Like all other humans, he thought it said what he expected it to say.
- No one ever asks for proof of your gender. With most stuff you can just check whatever box you want, no one is going to question it. My voter registration has always been Mr. because that's what I checked on the form.
Anyway, I likely would have put it off forever (who wants to go to the DMV anyway?), but soon I'll have to get a Vermont ID, and I don't know what their regulations and stuff are, but I do know they will just copy whatever is on my California ID. Since I have the form and the doctors here, better to get it over with.
There's nothing else really to tell, it went smoothly. The person who helped me didn't know how to input the form and had to get the manager, but they didn't look at me weird or chase me with pitchforks or anything.
I think this calls for French toast for lunch.
