peter recs :: gip
Dec. 8th, 2003 02:36 pmTwo Peter recs, both gen (sorry,
mariagoner!) and both excellent.
"Someone you can't rely on" by
caesia390
Short vignette of Peter's hopeless infatuation with and worship of James, and what happens when Lily steps in. The prose is muted and elegant, yet somehow evokes Peter's near-hysterical desperation at the shattering of his and James's little solar system.
"Ad Interim" by
secretcodename
This one is a post-OotP portrait of Peter's capacity for icy calculation, his complete detachment from normal human interaction, and emotional emptiness that he's barely even capable of registering as pain. Simply told, and chilling.
Though very different, these two pieces both evoke the way everything about Peter is directed outward -- only other people are important to him, and how he's going to relate to them. The last line of "Ad Interim" may be essentially true, and if it is, it's because Peter lacks self-insight, and can't even quite grasp that it's important. It struck me that
caesia390's fic focuses on the power of Peter's emotions, and
secretcodename's on the intelligent mind at work -- both of which are tragically smothered by both choice and circumstance.

And on a completely different note:

The cat is my very own Bad Kitty, Dana.

Hah! You thought you got the better of me, didn't you? Well, I'm moving on to a new pimp and a new drug dealer!
