Well, I see your replies the next time I check your LJ, which works fine for me. :-) (I usually make a point of checking regularly after I've made a post.)
Your cat issue also reminds me of our family cat, who passed away a few years ago at the ripe old age of 18 (almost 19). When she was younger, she would wait until she heard someone stirring in one of the bedrooms, first thing in the morning (about 5:30, say, which is when I got up in those days), and then begin scratching and meowing for breakfast. She rarely woke us up before we planned to get up anyway, although her scratching did a fair amount of damage to the door frames at first.
A few years later, we moved from a small one-story home into a larger two-story house, where the humans slept upstairs, and the cat slept downstairs in the living room. (At first, she attempted regular forays upstairs, especially in order to hide when it was time to go to the vet, but as she got older and sleepier, this was less of an issue.) I don't think we ever deliberately barred her from her regular sleeping quarters, though; I doubt she'd have taken it well.
You sound like you've got less space to work with, though, so I'm not sure what the ideal solution might be...sorry. :-/
