First person to blame Six Apart gets it in the teeth from me. Corporate mergers don't cause power outages, kids.

HP-related Fun Times will resume once LJ stops hyperventilating. By which I refer to both hardware and users.

Good night.

I was just waiting for someone to make that connection, declare the end times, and stage a mass exodus to deadjournal or something.

I was fearing the same thing, and have been very happy to find that's not the case. I haven't seen anything critical of LJ or Six Apart about the outage on my flist.

slashdog.org already did that yesterday. It provided some amusement (and a very few crumbs of information) while LJ was down. Considering that it's supposed to be the technogeek's hangout, there are some awfully naive opinions there about the nature of technology, and massive databases in particular.

*rolls eyes and laughs hysterically*

Exactly how were Six Apart supposed to completely overhaul LJ's infrastructure, backup/restore routines, integrity checks, and move datacentres in their first week of ownership?

As someone whose job includes cooking up the disaster recovery routines for a humble sixteen servers, and who has also suffered a complete power outage - electricity substation blew, UPS was only sufficient to give us 10 minutes to shut the servers down before they overheated due to the air conditioning in the machine room having gone with the power - I've been there, and I've done a fair bit of what they had to do yesterday, on a humbler scale. They were a tad optimistic about how fast they could get it back, but that happens. I'll be interested to read the post-mortem but really, it was just one of those things.

I was pretty impressed by my prediction of "tomorrow afternoon" when my friend asked me how long I thought lj'd be down, although I know nothing of such things. It does make me look a lot more knowledgable than I am.

I was on the fence between whether or not people would go "it's a hostile takeover, head for the hills!" and "it's the end times, next there'll be a plague of locusts!" what with the giant earthquake, tsunami, crazy weather etc.... although of course those things are probably all related in a much less interesting way than a sort of biblical apocalypse scenario.

I'm really rambling. You know, to the uninitiated, this sentence-- electricity substation blew, UPS was only sufficient to give us 10 minutes to shut the servers down before they overheated sounds like a nuclear meltdown or something. I can just imagine someone saying that in a movie while someone in a room full of wires with sirens and red lights says something like "give me 50 gigabytes of power!"

Red lights were remarkably lacking. The lights went out with the power, so we were shutting down servers in the dark, with only the glow from whatever power lights and consoles they had to offer to help us find the keyboard. And two torches. Pretty ludicrous really. :-)

Alas then came the grim reality of having to head in to work the following day to start everything up again and check it out after the power was restored.

Mind you, it did happen on a Friday evening, just like this LJ outage. Could probably make a conspiracy theory out of that...

I'm feeling like stepping waaaaaay away from the flist until the "OMG I could not live" vs "stfu get a life" debate settles down.

LJ's back up, folks. Where's the fic/art??

Yeah, I don't think I'll be reading my flist until people settle down and get back to the tasty Pr0n 'n' Analysis Stew to which I am accustomed in this fandom.

And hee, I like your icon. Vernon's malapropisms are more endearing to me than they probably are intended.

I love that icon and Vernon's confusion about why he hasn't heard of a certain "Lord." *credits [livejournal.com profile] jenavira with glee*

tasty Pr0n 'n' Analysis Stew

Now that's just looking for an icon, one suitably featuring a bowl of soup.

Heh :-) Sure is nice to see a calm and reasonable comment on this outage thing!
