Last night I posted Moving Pictures (NC-17, Sirius/James), the promised prequel to Heat Wave (same). No HBP spoilers -- it was written almost entirely before the book came out.

I almost never write more than one fic overtly in the same universe as another. Often I want/intend to, and then run out of steam or decide I don't have anything else interesting to say about a particular scenario. My hard drive is littered with failed attempts at sequels and prequels.

Heat Wave was for a fest, and I definitely didn't start out meaning to do a series. The plan was get in, write some meaningless smut, get out. But by the time I was done, I'd had such a blast that when a couple of people commented that they hoped there'd be more, I didn't have my usual reaction (grumble grumble people are never satisfied grumble) but actually found myself pretty enthused about the idea.

Next thing I knew, Heat Wave was starting to look like part two of a three- or even four-part series. A first-time prequel (Moving Pictures), then Heat Wave, then a sequel that addresses some of the less light-hearted stuff that got cut from the first draft of Heat Wave, and then possibly another sequel set after James has married Lily (avec Lily/James/Sirius action).

I wrote the bulk of Moving Pictures in June, but then in July there was HBP, and I stalled out. It's another of these fics without scene breaks, which are always a slog for me. But after the bookgasm had died down, I managed to finish it with the help of

_hannelore's continual encouragement (what can I say? the woman loves pr0n :D ) and my new ambition to Write A Series.

Today

nimori's been talking about fanfic-within-fanfic... Well, Moving Pictures has porn-within-porn. *g* I've been really wanting to write a fic where two characters look at porn together, and I don't know why it took me so long to come up with the moving-photographs idea, but once I did it was great fun to write -- getting to do little vignettes within the story.

I don't think I'll be able to come back to this series right away, since I've already got some other things that need writing, including the Birthday challenge on p_p and a supersecret post-HBP Peterfic. But I am determined! Series! Yes.

This is really good news. I couldn't imagine how they could make a PG-rated film out of that book without expurgating it into extreme lameness.
