Oh, I definitely agree with a lot of this -- and I really hope I'm not coming off as some kind of nanny who wants to lecture the nursery children on how to behave! I agree completely that it's important to see how hard this is for people, as we all know from our own experience. Because all these characters are a little damaged, everybody has trouble fighting their way to clarity and maturity. And in fact I think JKR's point, one of her major themes, is the way damaged, muddled people perpetuate all kinds of awfulness without intending to or being able to help it, because they do lack insight, because they do have issues that compromise their self-control and self-awareness. I just think that part of interpreting this world is applying a measuring stick to it that is based on some sort of vision of health and sanity. :)
