the symbolism of krycek/marita
Nov. 8th, 2003 01:11 amSome of you have probably seen the Patient X outtakes
deslea has kindly made available for us here. These outtakes are quite different from canon as aired, which gave us a much more ambiguous Marita. In the outtakes, she quite obviously feels as passionately about Krycek as he does about her.
I found the outtakes fun to watch, but I don't wish they were canon. To me, the ambiguity is what's interesting about the relationship.
In a sense, her relationship with Krycek models her relationship to the Consortium. I don't think she got involved with the conspiracy for the money, I think she truly wanted to believe that the Consortium's actions were in the best interests of humanity. Every time they betrayed that belief, it burned her, but there came a point where she was so far in that she didn't know how to get out.
I think she also wanted to believe Krycek was acting for the greater good, but found him almost as mysterious as the Consortium. She didn't know for sure what his agenda was or if he was out for anyone but himself. She was "in bed", as it were, with both Krycek and the Consortium, but neither relationship was sure or comfortable.
In Patient X, the mirrored relationships collide. In attempting to bring Dmitri to Mulder, Marita betrays both Krycek and WMM (and the Consortium by extension), and strikes out on her own. When her plan backfires, the consequences come from both sides: she's imprisoned by the Consortium, and Krycek doesn't help her (whether or not he *could* have helped her is debatable, but this is from her perspective).
My knowledge of XF canon is somewhat rusty, so feel free to tell me if I'm not making sense.
