For [livejournal.com profile] chresimos:

amleiu "useful thing"

X-SAMPA / {mlEIU_(drop) /

Chresimos is Greek for "useful".

a- Restrictive relative clause.

m- No actor.

le "to use (deliberately)"

-i No target.

-u Object-head relative clause. This clause has no object, so the formation is nominal -- "that which is used".

The written form has two characters. The first (on the right) is le "to use". The second is a-u (restrictive object-head relative clause). The morphemes indicating the lack of verb arguments are represented by zero graphs (ie, blank space).

As you might guess, the word Amíu is also a headless relative clause:

a- Restrictive relative clause.

0- (Zero morph.) First-person actor.

"to speak"

-0 (Zero morph.) First-person target.

-u Object-head relative clause. Again, the clause has no object, so it's a nominal formation. "That which we speak to each other."

I believe I'll be out of town for the next couple of days, so there'll probably be a break in the PoA posts, but the analytic madness has spread: Check out [livejournal.com profile] chresimos's post on perceptions of physically attractive characters (split off from Chapter 2), and [livejournal.com profile] glitterdemon's on why Dumbledore hired Remus (split off from Chapter 5).

For those just tuning in, I'm saving the PoA posts in memories here.
