The list.

It seems a meme from long ago is coming back around,
So I'll make a little list -- I'll make a little list
Of fandom trends that bother me where'er they may be found,
And that never would be missed -- that never would be missed.

There's the BNFs who dare complain they get too much feedback,
And the cavalcade of portmanteaux -- Snarry, Snupin, Snack.
There's the drooling Draco fangirls who all think he'll be redeemed,
And the endless speculation on that damned "triumphant gleam".

And all those who on canon Remus/Sirius insist--
They'd none of 'em be missed -- they'd none of 'em be missed!

The writers who make sex gods out of characters like Snape.
His greasy hair is missed -- by me, it's greatly missed!
Annoying fandom terms like "OT3" and "canon rape".
I don't think they'd be missed -- I'm sure they'd not be missed!

The ones who think there's anything but death beyond the Veil,
And those who claim the dog did not deserve his stint in jail.
Ungrateful fen who'd like to give Ms Rowling a swift kick,
And don't forget the twincest, that stuff really makes me sick!

And all the princely theories on the title of Book Six--
Take them out of the mix -- I don't think they'd be missed!

There's the Alan Rickman fangirls, overflowing with their glee,
And the ones who liked Thewlis -- I doubt that they'd be missed!
There's the readers who can't think of anything to say but "squee"--
I don't think they'd be missed -- I'm sure they'd not be missed!

Exclusionary drabble nights and invite-only comms,
Those who divide the cast list into switches, subs, and doms,
Pseudo-intellectuals who expound on canon's themes,
And those who fill their LJs with these bellyaching memes.

It really doesn't matter what gets other people pissed;
Keep everything that I like -- the rest will not be missed!

(In case it isn't painfully obvious, THIS IS A JOKE. Don't hurt me.)

It seems today is beta reader appreciation day. I, for one, would be lost without my betas. I may have left [livejournal.com profile] bardsmaid's fandom, but I often think back on her wise advice when I'm writing. I don't know what I'd do without [livejournal.com profile] caesia390's tough love and copious red ink. And to [livejournal.com profile] keladryb and [livejournal.com profile] millefiori and [livejournal.com profile] malograntum, and anyone else who's ever worked with me -- thank you.

Never underestimate the importance of a beta. Nobody's good enough that they can't benefit from another pair of eyes.

CoS 7: Mudbloods and Murmurs

'I don't really understand Quidditch,' said Colin breathlessly. 'Is it true there are four balls? And two of them fly round trying to knock people off their brooms?'
'Yes,' said Harry heavily, resigned to explaining the complicated rules of Quidditch. 'They're called Bludgers. There are two Beaters on each team[...]'
(82-83)
And so on. It's not often that Harry gets to play exposition fairy, though I have to say it reads better than exposition in the narrative.

Marcus, sexism, dirty words, and Dumbledore's motivations (eek!) )
