Jun. 15th, 2005 02:46 pmThose of you who pronounced pauraque as if it were French would be wrong -- though not alone. Those of you who pronounced it as if it were Latin would also be wrong, but very charmingly so. Many other possible pronunciations were suggested, including rhyming it with baroque!
Those of you who pronounced it as if it were Spanish would be correct. A pauraque is a bird (the one in my icon), and the name is thought to be a hispanicized version of a native American word for it.
