A friend of mine was expecting a baby. Well, not at first -- the pregnancy was an accident, and he had already broken up with the mother by the time she realized she was pregnant. She decided to keep the baby, and he approached it with characteristic upstandingness and enthusiasm, admitting that while it wasn't the turn he thought his life would take, now that it had happened he could see how being a father might be wonderful. He was talking to her parents and planning how it would work. He was thinking about schools. He was rearranging his life.

That was three months ago. I found out last night she miscarried.
