I'm taking most of the day off work today because I had a very painful medical procedure done yesterday, and I figure among reasons to take off work, that's a pretty good one. The good news is that I don't have bladder cancer. The bad news, as usual, is that they don't know what I do have.

I was trying to think how to explain why my WoW guild collapsed in a way my fandom friends could understand, and the first thing that came to mind was Pornish Pixies, and the attendant perpetual wank about being "elitist" and why one writer got invited and another didn't, and so on. That analogy only goes so far, because a guild is really more like a sports team -- some players are gonna get cut. (Okay I've never been on a sports team. But I've seen them on TV.)

In our case the wank wasn't about people getting cut and crying about it, it was actually about the leaders of the guild resisting the idea that they had to cut anyone, which was highly ironic as that was the primary reason we left our previous guild.

As it turns out, it's very easy to say "we'd be better off without these people, wouldn't things be different if we were in charge", but very difficult -- for some -- to actually put it into practice.

I think I've posted before about how I've been playing this game with the same core group of 10 or so people for 2+ years, staying together through three guild splits and transferring to a new server together. (Transferring servers costs 25 bucks per character, so yeah we loved each other a lot.)

Past dramas were always "our group" sticking together against another, so I guess we were due for an internal explosion. When the negative effects of the whole "not cutting anybody" policy came to a head, everyone was already so frustrated and angry that it just degenerated into a blame-fest, former friends turning on each other, huge wank complete with bahleeted posts, etc.

Three of the four leaders quit the game -- suddenly, but at least maintaining some level of dignity. Though some people found it slightly irritating to hear "everything is fine everything is fine everything is fine BTW we're all quitting good luck".

As for the fourth -- the actual founder and top dog of the whole thing -- he first decided to "take a break for a month", which then changed to "just quitting raiding", then "maybe raiding sometimes", and has actually amounted to him hanging around and actively sabotaging the attempts of others to salvage what was left of the guild.

So. I don't know what my plans are. It's not the game I'm burnt out on, it's being treated like shit by people who used to be my friends, in what used to be my escape. Sadly probably most of you in fandom can relate to that.

Oh, hon...this sounds very disheartening. What do the other long-term players feel about this whole situation? Would they be willing to make yet another move?

It depends who you ask, some are willing to rebuild, others are just done.

The tricky thing about rebuilding right now, even leaving aside the internal politics and personalities, is that we had made it very far into the game, and when you have to rebuild a group and get a bunch of new players like that, you have to drop back and re-do a lot of earlier bosses. Some would be willing to do that, others would find it too boring and leave for greener pastures.

Another choice is to wait for the next expansion to the game, which basically lets you start fresh with a completely new sequence of bosses. Only trouble is that's not due to happen until November at the earliest, and by that time folks may have scattered to the four winds.

But in some ways it's comparable to HP fandom, where people would often drift away between books but turn up again for new canon. Even the three people who already quit, left saying "maybe we'll see you in the next expansion". :P

Ugh. Why does that always happen in things like this? Do people who just play sports have to deal with this kind of thing, I wonder?

Hope they find out what's wrong with you soon and that it turns out to be something like "eat more peas."

The thing is that he never bothered to apologize, never bothered to say "maybe I could have done this better," he just took the lowest road of accusation and lies. That's the thing that makes it so hard for me to move on.

And I'm glad you were able to take some time off today. I hope I didn't wake you up. >.>

No, I woke up early to tell Shelly I was owie. I might still have to go in to close but only for a little while.

I suspect with distance I'll get over the anger at Ary. I think he really has problems. But I can't get over it now, while he's still logging on every day and stirring up shit, fighting with Ug for control, taking crap from the bank, all of it. He needs to just go away, or I do.

Heh. I do the same thing in AV. :P

I'm sort of playing wait & see at the moment. My raiding guild blew up on Brutallus. I went back to the casual raiding/family guild, but a week in Hyjal with them was enough to remind me why I left in the first place.

Right now I'm pvp'ing, leveling (another) alt, and trying to figure how to steal enough people that, come xpac, I can start my own 10-man. *g*

I miss raiding, definitely. But it's been nice to have time off, too. :)

:( I'm sorry about your health woes (though very relieved that you don't have bladder cancer) and about your guild crapping out. *smooches* I miss you. I have a wedding I want to attend in August in your area, but I'm not sure I can afford to come.

Well let me know if you can come! Is it one of those newfangled types of weddings, or the old regular type?

(Note to self, order more gay wedding cards, they're sold out AGAIN.)

It's an old school hetero-type wedding. Is your email still the yahoo address I have from a while ago? I may email you to figure some logistics out (I wish I had an infinite supply of dollars).

Ooh. Sorry for everything. Including the painful medical procedure (but not for the not-having-cancer bit. That's good).
