florahart gave me R, which you wouldn't think would be challenging.
1. Rrrrrron Weasley
It's so hard to remember what happened in the HP books. SO HARD. It's amazing how fast you can go from encyclopedic canon knowledge when you're actually writing in a fandom, to... um, Ron Weasley was a character in the Harry Potter books. I wanted him to be much more interesting and disturbed than he was. Though I wrote him several times I think I always wore his canon personality very lightly... I was more using him as a springboard to write what I wanted to write about, than commenting on his role in the books, which I never had a clear understanding of anyway.
2. Monica Reyes
Aw, Reyes. It wasn't your fault you got tacked onto the suck-end of X-Files, when nobody was even pretending to know what the show was about anymore. I doubt I could give even the loosest summary of what happened in canon while she was on the show, but some people wrote some pretty good fic about her as I recall, where she was a lot cooler and more interesting (not hard to achieve).
3. William Riker
TNG was so formative for me that I still have a hard time reading fic for it. My affection for all its characters is unassailable. I think when I was really little I kind of wanted to be like Riker! (The show came on when I was eight, give me a break.) He did exciting and dangerous stuff, and he didn't take much crap from people as I recall! Phasers pew pew.
4. um... Rexxar?
That guy they got to replace him sucks. He doesn't even pat. (Ony chain too hard, needed a nerf yeah?) Kids today don't know about real Championing. Rexxar should pat around Blade's Edge.
5. Remus Lupin
My concept of Remus is heavily influenced by the movies. He never read clearly to me in the books, he was just hard to pin down. Which is strange, because in general JKR draws in broad bright strokes and it's pretty hard to misunderstand what she wants you to picture. I find Thewlis a great actor (check out Naked if you haven't!) and thought he utterly stole the PoA movie. His interpretation was one I was happy to accept.
I was really disappointed in what she did with Remus in the later books. The relationship with Tonks rang completely false, and the fact that she crowbarred that old werewolf=gay crap into it and then did nothing with it made me genuinely mad at the time. By the time she killed him off I was rolling my eyes so hard my reaction was more like "well, go fucking figure". Which was my mindset for most of that book.
Oh well, he's still a good character, even if she didn't want to do anything interesting with him. :P
eta: oh shit I forgot rincewind! D:

Date: 2008-09-13 10:39 am (UTC)Oh, and I agree with you about Lupin. I wasn't bothered at all by the way they portrait him in PoA.

Date: 2008-09-13 12:37 pm (UTC)William Riker reminds me of a female tauren (a good one, not kinkycow) who is always standing silently but on occasion looks like he will either 1) roll his eyes or 2) break your nose. I liked him too. I liked that he made Patrick Stewart look short. And he always looked sort of lol awkward, which I found endearing.
