The talk page is very interesting on that article. I was surprised and grateful to see that wikipedia has a rather progressive policy regarding gender. I was also surprised to read a CNN article that used "he" throughout the whole thing. progress yaye?

That is exactly why I linked to Wikipedia and not any of the news stories I'd seen, which were not consistent in their pronoun use.

Good idea. I was pretty shocked to see the consistent pronoun use in that one article and felt like I ought to write them and say "thanks and spread the word, yo."

GLAAD has a helpful pronoun preference guide for news outlets that Don't Get It.

Someone said over on Shakesville that the AP stylebook requires consistent pronoun usage of the affirmed gender (is that the right phrasing?), so if news stories are failing at that, they're screwing up their own industry guidelines.

Exactly and they should be called out on that. For a lot of reporters (or the way it used to be), the AP stylebook is akin to the bible.
