Fishing for recs in a peculiar river.
Aug. 19th, 2005 12:12 amAugust is turning into a great month for fandom. Maybe everyone's over the initial new-canon shock and is ready to produce again.
By the way, I'm not cutting or labeling HBP spoilers anymore, so... yeah. Embrace the canon! Live it! Love it! Manipulate it to suit your nefarious purposes!
Things That Could Be Crackfic, But Aren't.

This isn't an HP story. This a story about Disney ducks. WAIT COME BACK. This is the very epitome of what good fan fiction should be -- it's art, and it's commentary, and it couldn't possibly be written about any other characters. Try it, I swear you'll like it.
A Carefully Crafted Letter (NC-17, Filch + Macnair + Ron) by

Okay, so this is a little closer to the crackfic end, but I found it much more charming than brain-breaking. Not all that far from how I see Filch in canon, really! Funny as hell, too.
Pairings I Never Thought I'd Love.
The Secret-Keeper (NC-17, Snape/Hermione) by
switchknife (fic) and
lizardspots (art) [Not worksafe!]
At times I've called Snape/Hermione my least favorite fandom pairing, which is because I usually hate the way it's written -- as a romance. This is not a romance, not at all. It's blackmail and manipulation and abuse, and it's relentless -- glorious -- in its careful realism. If all Snape/Hermione were like this, I'd read and read and read.
Felix's Helping Hand (NC-17, Harry/Draco) by
_hannelore
Before HBP, H/D held no interest for me, but now there's starting to be this wave of... I don't know, nouveau H/D that really delves into all the great material the book provides. Hannelore sinks her teeth into it here, perfectly capturing the hateful place Harry's arrived at by the end of HBP. Draco's voice, too, is spot-on -- she lets him be just as wretched as he should be, in both senses of the word. This isn't your mother's Harry/Draco.
Dogdays drabbles [one two three four six seven fourteen] (R and below, Remus/Sirius) by
imochan
Imochan -- ah. What can be said? These are ficlets from the
dogdaysofsummer challenge, which I haven't been following except for her entries. I never think I like R/S until her words draw me in and leave me breathless. I sometimes find myself comparing her to
nopejr, who has a similar gift for compressing mindstopping prose into a very small space, but while Nope's small stories feel carefully crafted, Imochan's give the impression of wild effortlessness. (Not that I'm praising one style over the other -- I love both.)
Phew. That was a lot of fanboying. If you read and like any of these stories, don't forget to let the authors know!
