In case anyone was curious, the other song that sounds like Mad World is Gone Away by the Offspring. My memory was jogged as soon as [livejournal.com profile] aretina mentioned a lyric from it. Further investigation reveals that not only do the two songs briefly share a melody, they also share the same chord progression on the verse, namely Fm Fm Eb Bb.

Gone Away also has this same progression on the chorus. Mad World's chorus differs slightly. I found a midi of the cover of Mad World, and it's quite easy and euphonious to sing the tune of Gone Away to the instrumental part of Mad World with the melody muted. The parts where the melody is the same (Gone Away's "now that you've gone away", Mad World's "going nowhere, going nowhere", and their analogs in the other verses) are certainly not my imagination.

I wonder if Tears For Fears is aware that the Offspring copied heavily and noticeably (though perhaps not consciously) from one of their songs.

I couldn't be sure if my eyes were deceiving me, but [livejournal.com profile] scribbulus_ink and others are of the opinion that that was most definitely Lex and Rich spooning.

About which I can only say:

!!!

Some other things happened as well, but I can't seem to recall what they were at the moment. Oh, one thing-- That was one of the more entertaning reward challenges I've seen. The reward challenges are usually more gruelling than the immunity challenges, I think, and this was no exception. Robfather &co (not remembering tribe names right now) completely deserved the win for that smooth move emptying out the weights in one go, and then *again* with the hauling the boat up on the platform. Way to go! I was sorry we didn't get to find out who actually came up with those ideas, 'cause whoever it was, they're a quick thinker under pressure.

I double-checked my tape to confirm, and it was definitely Rich and Lex spooning -- I saw Lex's tattoos and Rich's beard. We have official Survivor spoonage! :D

Whoo! Any possibility of screen caps? There are a couple of people I want to convince. :D

I wish I could! I'd be taking caps frame by frame. LOL Unfortunately, I don't have any way to hook my VCR up to my computer, so I can't offer proof.

::pumps fist in air::

I rule! I heard the cover of Mad World from another room one time and assumed it was the Offspring being covered. The cover of Mad World seems to resemble Gone Away more than it actually resembles its parent song. Strange.

I think so too, actually, comparing the three. And yes, you rule! Thank you. :)

I was so bummed for the tribe Rupert is with when they lost immunity. Poor Rudy :-/

Favorite part was when Ethan called Jeff "Pretty Boy Probst", heh

Yeah, really discouraging, after they'd got so far ahead. Looks like ol' Rupert doesn't have much of a chance from his current position, though one never knows.
