I'm sick... again. I really don't know why. I almost never get sick, yet I've had basically the same cold/flu thing twice this winter already. Maybe it's because I went back to working retail, though generally in the past I've only used my sick days on being fake sick, because I never got sick for real. (
_hannelore would say this is my punishment for faking being sick before.)
There are benefits to working in a very small organization, but when you really only have 2 co-workers, you can't call in sick the week before Christmas. Except I did, sort of. I found out the other store had FOUR people scheduled to work today (wtf luxury), and basically said look, I'm sick, I'm going to keep getting sicker if I don't take a day off, this is exactly what happened the last time I was sick and didn't take a day off, and you complained I got everyone else sick too.
Of course the person who ultimately came to cover for me was the owner of the company, who is possibly the least qualified to hold down the fort, of the potentially available people. There's nothing really wrong with her (as contrasted with past bosses I have known), but she doesn't actually have much retail experience. She used to do something totally unrelated, then decided she wanted her own business so she bought an existing retail mini-chain from someone who wanted to sell.
So now she's at my store freaking out because she's never been directly in charge of an extremely busy store during Christmas. When my boss called to tell me this, she was like, "So [owner] had the balls to say to me, 'How come you and [
pauraque] aren't freaking out when I call over here?', and the answer is that WE don't freak out because WE have DONE this before at even busier stores during Christmas and know how to handle it."
Which is true, and I guess a welcome acknowledgement from my boss that I don't suck. So there's that.
But yeah basically I get no enjoyment from being at home, even besides the fact that I'm sick, because the owner is over there messing things up and making it more chaotic for my minions who had thought they were coming in to work with the Nice Manager Who Stays Calm During Christmas, and not the Scary Owner Who Is Freaking Out. And I get to clean up the mess tomorrow.
It's liek weeeeee.
