which represents the required steps to access the highest-level area in WoW at the time of the Burning Crusade expansion. Progression is towards the center of the lower circle. I'd never seen a chart of it that showed the connection between the heroics required for SSC and TK attunement, so I made one just for myself. It helped me remember the information it represented, and I thought it was pretty.
It's interesting looking at this and thinking about my mindset then, being in a brand new guild and really eager to get into the higher end, quite believing we'd be there soon. Certainly not thinking it would take six months to get past that little red dot labeled Karazhan.
I didn't update my picture when the game added more stuff, because that would have been a lot of work to make room at the apex for Black Temple attunement, and I guess I'd lost the motivation.
When at last I made a revised version recently, things were rather different:
Progression is from bottom to top. Or well, it was. None of this is required anymore. Blizzard are very good at what they do... The idea is to start out by making the new content so arduous and complex that even the hardcore playerbase will take a while to work through it all (figure a), and once they've done that, to gradually make it more and more accessible so that a larger portion of players will get to have a crack at it (figure b), until at last everything is open to the entry-level player to try if they choose. Thus is maximum paying playtime squeezed out of every player.
Then we will buy another expansion and begin again!
