Here are five questions from [personal profile] delphi. If you want questions, just ask!

1) If you could/had to live in any fictional universe, which one would you choose?

This is tough, and I'd stay here if I had the option, but if I had to choose I think I'd go with Star Trek. The medical tech should be advanced enough to cure my chronic illnesses, which would be super sweet, and human society is all tolerant and hands-across-the-Federation, which is implausible as fiction but seems like it would be pretty safe to live in, at least. (I'm assuming here that things *are* as happy and peaceful as Roddenberry wanted them to be -- Trek at face value, not considering the possible downsides.)

First runner-up: The future world in Le Guin's Always Coming Home, again due to its improbably utopian nature. They say you're not supposed to create a world that's too perfect because it will be boring to read about, but if you're as good a writer as Le Guin, you can *just* get away with it. The book does have some peril and conflict, but in general things are pretty damn nice for a post-apocalypse. And probably safer even than Trek, because you're less likely to get blown up or assimilated. But they don't have advanced medicine, so that would suck for me.

Second runner-up: Sesame Street.

2) Midnight snack of choice?

Eating at midnight is normal for me. I don't eat breakfast; I eat lunch and dinner at normal times and then eat again before I go to bed. I don't get hungry until noon, and it's hard for me to eat before then if I have to for some reason.

So, um, I don't know! I eat a lot of different things. Usually something non-messy so I can eat it at the computer. I feel weird eating at the table when everyone else is in bed.

3) What do you wish more fanfic or pro authors were writing?

I'd like it if Warcraft fandom had more fic. There are artists aplenty, but few writers. I still write it even though I know there isn't a huge audience, because for me it has the defining factor that makes me want to write in a fandom, which is that the source material is strangely addictive while at the same time having a lot of qualities that are absolutely maddening. (I say this with all due affection for my past and present fandoms.)

More generally, I wish there were more fic that doesn't take such a traditional view towards sex. And when I say traditional, I mean traditions like the idea that sex has to involve people's genitals and/or butts touching. There are a lot of people out here in the real world having sex that doesn't look anything like the sex scenes we get over and over (and OVER) in fanfiction. Outside of [community profile] kink_bingo (♥), there is not a lot of fandom material that reflects my real actual sex life, and while this in no way impedes my happiness, I would be delighted if it were different.

As for pro authors, I'm not a big reader of pro fic, so I wouldn't presume to comment on that. I think nonfiction could always use more books about the everyday lives of ordinary people in history, which is considerably more interesting to me than whatever the king was doing at the time.

You know, people have opinions about what fanfic they'd like to see, but does anybody ever bemoan the lack of certain kinds of meta (fan-nonfiction)? I've never seen that.

4) What language(s) would you like to learn, given the time and resources to study.

This is a boring answer, but I would like to be fluent in French. I can read and understand well enough, but my production is hesitant and broken because I don't practice like I should, and I'm too self-conscious about mistakes.

Knowing major world languages like Spanish and Mandarin would no doubt be useful and open up a lot of important literature, but that's pure practicality. My area of interest is mostly studying how languages work, and not so much learning to speak them. I will read an entire reference grammar from beginning to end, but that doesn't mean I want to speak that language.

5) And the classic superpower question: Flight or invisibility?

The thing about invisibility is there aren't very many things you can do with it that aren't kind of questionably motivated. I mean, you could disappear when you're in danger, though I'm lucky enough not to face physical peril very often. But other than that, why would you *want* to be invisible? I don't really need a super power to avoid people, and it seems like it would be tempting to eavesdrop, spy, steal, etc.

Flight seems like the better choice. It's fun, you can travel to places conveniently, and you can use it to escape dangerous situations too. So it has the same benefit of invisibility without as much potential for abuse.

As an aside, I think the most amazing superpower is neither of these, but rather Wonder Woman's ability to force people to tell the truth. I wouldn't really want the responsibility of that power, but can you imagine what it would be like to never be lied to again? Now *that* would change your life.

Well, this is hard because I basically already know everything about you. Hmm.

1) What thing that you've done are you the most proud of?

2) How did the reality of parenthood compare to your expectations of it?

3) What was the biggest or most memorable story you covered as a reporter?

4) If you could add one subject to the school curriculum, what would it be?

5) What place would you like to visit that you haven't already?

You might like this site, which basically just aggregates articles on ancient history, but often includes some off-the-beaten-path stuff that isn't in the history books from high school.

Does anyone ever choose invisibility? And if they do is it only people who are just horribly painfully shy, or afraid of heights? Or are there people who just really want to eavesdrop on celebrities and politicians (and/or steal diamonds)?
