amiu - "hook"

Those of you who are tapping your virtual feet waiting for me to talk about something besides linguistics and Simon Cowell's choice of t-shirts, you are soon to be satisfied. I plan to re-read PoA at a chapter a day (ish) starting quite soon, and subject you all to my chapterly thoughts. But first:
For
nicolthewhore:

jéomor "hook"
X-SAMPA / jeOmO_(drop)r\ /
Nicol originally requested "hooking off", which is the title of her and
caesia390's ongoing fic series on the life and *cough* loves of Capt. James Hook. As excellent a phrase as this is, it proved impossible to render into Amiu. However, I used the suggestion to invent a word for "hook" which shall forever be dedicated to Nicol, Caesia, and James. I hope you approve.
The phonetic is the first character on the right: jeom "crocodile". It's a pictogram; the crocodile's mouth is open, its tail is curved, and two of its legs are visible. (It also appears to be wearing a leash, but that's a result of the stylisation process.)
The determinative is "boat", also a pictogram, made up of a sail, a hull, and a stroke of water. This makes jéem "line", referring to ropes used on board a sailing craft.
The final character represents the "instrumental bringer" inflection, giving us jéomor, a tool for retrieving line on a ship -- that is, a particular type of hook.
chresimos is next in line for an icon, putting her at the head of this queue and the fic queue. I promise to have Brutus/Cassius for you soon.

Date: 2004-04-25 02:52 pm (UTC)i intentionally requested "hooking off," knowing that it would take hella mad skillz to make it work in a different language.
