Those of you who are tapping your virtual feet waiting for me to talk about something besides linguistics and Simon Cowell's choice of t-shirts, you are soon to be satisfied. I plan to re-read PoA at a chapter a day (ish) starting quite soon, and subject you all to my chapterly thoughts. But first:

For [livejournal.com profile] nicolthewhore:

jéomor "hook"

X-SAMPA / jeOmO_(drop)r\ /

Nicol originally requested "hooking off", which is the title of her and [livejournal.com profile] caesia390's ongoing fic series on the life and *cough* loves of Capt. James Hook. As excellent a phrase as this is, it proved impossible to render into Amiu. However, I used the suggestion to invent a word for "hook" which shall forever be dedicated to Nicol, Caesia, and James. I hope you approve.

The phonetic is the first character on the right: jeom "crocodile". It's a pictogram; the crocodile's mouth is open, its tail is curved, and two of its legs are visible. (It also appears to be wearing a leash, but that's a result of the stylisation process.)

The determinative is "boat", also a pictogram, made up of a sail, a hull, and a stroke of water. This makes jéem "line", referring to ropes used on board a sailing craft.

The final character represents the "instrumental bringer" inflection, giving us jéomor, a tool for retrieving line on a ship -- that is, a particular type of hook.

[livejournal.com profile] chresimos is next in line for an icon, putting her at the head of this queue and the fic queue. I promise to have Brutus/Cassius for you soon.

Seriously looking forward to your chapterly thoughts on PoA. Just finished my reread of it, and I'm dying to skip GoF and just read OotP....but I'm being patient. Sigh.

I really need to re-read GoF, though I think I'll wait until after the PoA movie. I've only read GoF once, and that was at top speed, over a year ago.

can't wait for PoA thoughts. I've started on french GoF and a re-read of OOTP (english!). In the run up to the film this will be fun - but don't read too quickly!!

I got about a fourth of the way through Coupe de Feu before giving up. I can read at that level in French (I got through Prisonnier d'Azkaban without a problem), but GoF just takes so long to get off the ground, I got antsy. Maybe I'll try again after the PoA movie.

Mmm, chapterly thoughts. Pictograms are cute. I await my turn with patient glee. *bows*

i love you pauraque. i ... love you. beyond words.

i intentionally requested "hooking off," knowing that it would take hella mad skillz to make it work in a different language.

its not "hooking off" word for word, but i am in love with it all the same. i am seriously considering branding it to my forehead for awhile. :D

name your price. any drabble, any pairing, any universe, is yours courtesy of moi. i'll do what i can.

I just bought my own copy of PoA and started to force myself to read it v-e-r-r-r-r-y slowly.
