I think my first fandom interaction was on a Buffy mailing list back in, omg, maybe 1998? Very pleased to say I have none of that saved! It was mostly a discussion list though; I don't remember anyone ever mentioning fic or art, or I'd have been in fandom properly a lot earlier, I think!
