We haven't? We know he was a Death Eater, the ultimate bullies in the HP universe. We hear him call Lily a Mudblood two seconds after she's intervened on his behalf. I see no reason to doubt that he came to school knowing more curses than the seventh years... I mean, we took on faith that James was an arrogant bully before we saw it; why give Snape more benefit of the doubt? We've seen him bullying regularly as an adult; I have no doubt whatsoever that his personality wasn't sufficiently different as a child. The only day we've ever "seen" was the day of their OWLs.
