The WoW Valentine's Day event has just started. The description said it would involve putting on perfume or cologne to attract the love of certain NPCs, so of course the immediate question on everyone's mind was whether you would be able to win the affections of an NPC of the same sex.

Not that it makes up for the whole unpleasantness, but I'm happy to say that you can. :)

The vendor says male NPCs like perfume, and female NPCs like cologne. So I went to see if I could put perfume on my male character. Yup.

And would the male NPCs fall in love with me? They sure did.

(You can only get the really awesome gifts once an hour.)

And if I approached the female NPCs wearing my perfume? Rejected!

While running around trying to get V-day gifts from all the computer-controlled men of Thunder Bluff, I saw a female guild-mate doing the same with the ladies. We waved and kissed each other, and a random onlooker was moved to shoot us both with Cupid's arrows, which make a weird little goblin Cupid appear and follow you around for a while.

I wasn't really that surprised that this worked, since during the fireworks you could get the Infatuation buff by kissing NPCs of either gender. Hasn't seemed to cause any negative comments in general chat, at least not on my server.

The one thing you can't do is wear both perfume and cologne to attract both genders at the same time. You could alternate, though. :)

ETA: Man, there are a lot of female guards in Orgrimmar. I never noticed until I had to go looking for boys. :P

My (male) troll put on some cologne and made one of the big scary guards in Undercity fall in love with him. It sure didn't look like a girl. I can't remember if the other NPCs that were in love with me were male or female, because I was too amused by the idea of a spellbinding story of the love between a troll and a guard 5 times his size.

Hi!

I was able to give a token to one of the UC guards while I was wearing perfume, so I guess it was considered male, or at least male enough for jazz. He broke my heart, though. That's what I get for trying to look beyond superficial appearances! T_T

Maybe the male and female UC guards look the same? I think I saw hearts about almost all of their heads... I don't think I could have put on perfume by accident.

Maybe my troll's unbelieveable charisma and mojo transcends such mundane things as gender. That or he's a playa.

I haven't done any of the valentine stuff yet, but my mother reports that the guards in Undercity are ungendered, they go for both cologne and perfume, and they never break your heart. I guess when you're an abomination, you're not choosey.

After finishing the UC part of the quest, I agree that the Abominations are non-gendered (who knew?). However, several of them did break my heart.
