Something about Katie Couric? What happened and why do we care?

I guess she is anchoring the CBS Nightly News now. She just started; got big ratings.

As for why we care, well...that's a question for the ages.

She's not the First Woman on the Moon Behind the Anchor Desk, is she? I was afraid it was something like that.

Actually, apparently she is. Well, she's the first solo permanent anchor of one of the major network nightly news broadcasts. So she's in the same position that Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather were once in. OMG!

It's that whole "trusted news personality" thing. Traditionally, the major news anchors have been father-figures. I mean, wasn't Cronkite considered "the most trusted man in America" at one point? It seems to be a very emotional, hindbrain-response kind of thing for people. Or at least it used to before the Internet made the nightly news obsolete. :)

What makes me shake my head a bit is not that it's a woman, but that it's Katie Couric! She doesn't scream "take me seriously" to me...

It's funny, because as far as I can tell the only people who give a crap are also on the news. TV news itself is unbearably masturbatory, so it's an appropriate microcosm, I guess.

Yeah, it was one thing forty years ago when there was the morning paper and the nightly news and that was IT as far as media sources/news of the outside world went. But now, it just doesn't register as important at all. I know very few people who even WATCH the news, and those few who do watch Jim Lehrer. :)

(Jim would be MY most trusted man in America if it weren't for those beady little eyes...)

I hate Katie Couric, too!

Definitely a lightweight. I keep thinking that I'm watching "The View." I guess that people are tuning in this week just to see how she handles it. I still can not believe that she's getting paid so much! I guess CBS figured they'd pick up some new viewer demographics.

My boss is so depressed! He hates her too and has to find another news broadcast to watch in the evenings.

Current CBS main anchor and I Don't Care.

Gwen Ifel...now SHE would have rocked my socks.

Given that I've not watched primetime news in probably 15 years (or morning TV either), my only question in the whole thing is whether she still oils her legs before going on the air even though she's behind a desk.

Every pic I ever saw of her on the Today set? Legs sooooo shiny....

As well as being the new CBS anchor, someone in the publicity dept. at CBS apparently photoshoped some pics of her to make it look like she was 20lbs. lighter, for the print ads and such. People were screaming on the news programs about how "women journalists are held to higher beauty standards," and "how the media has an unrealistic portrayal of women" etc.

Ms. Couric denied knowing anything about it, and was apparently furious when she found out.

She just became the first solo female anchor for a major network news program (CBS). She vowed that she was going to be *all* about the news and the facts.

On her debut program, she said that terrorism started with the 9/11 bombing (!) and she also had a feature about the release of Tom Cruise's baby photos. Clearly, she is ALL about the news.

Unfortunately, she is all about the fake, wrong news.

She's an embarrassment, IMO.
