In olden tymes, what DID they use for lube? Surely this comes up in certain fandoms, but I have never had to deal with it before. I feel super lame for having to ask this. :(

I always assumed they used some kind of fat, maybe like tallow? It would have been readily available (since poor people used it instead of wax for candles) and I *think* the consistency would have been greasy enough to use as lube. It is possible that I spend too much time thinking about historical sex.

Ancient Romans used olive oil, or so I've read.

The first print advertisement for Crisco was released in popular women's magazines in January 1912. ..... By the 1970s, however, Crisco and other vegetable shortening had become the most widely used lubricants. The first-edition of The Joy of Gay Sex, published in 1977, declared, “Vegetable shortening may be the best lubricant, since it is not only greasy but also digestible”

I finally read this. If you ignore the academic claptrap it's pretty nifty.

I remember reading something in the book Courtesans and Fishcakes (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Courtesans-Fishcakes-Consuming-Passions-Classical/dp/0006863434) that was a primary source in which a Greek was alleging his civilisation's cultural superiority on the grounds that while they used olive oil, the Persians used spit.
