I think getting slightly ahead so that you can have slippage days is definitely a good plan. It takes a bit of the pressure off.

Alas, I only have 185 words of contingency to play with. I should probably try to do something about that, so that I can take a night off at some point.

I want to be more ahead than I am, because it's only going to get harder with everything else I have to do this month. I think I underestimated the difficulty of the task.
