I sawed it!

I enjoyed it. I think my friend liked it more than I did. I wasn't as blown away as a lot of people on my flist appear to have been. Maybe my expectations had gotten too high? It was a fun flick. There are holes and unbelievabilities in the plot all over the place, but the style is breezy enough that you just kind of shrug and go with it.

I think what might have bumped it up a few notches would have been a compelling villain. Nero is boring, I didn't care about him. At times he seemed to be beaming in from some other movie, maybe a cyberpunk fantasy? I did kind of wonder about the other Romulans who were working with him, like what do they see in this guy, how were they motivated to help him? It's not a movie that asks or answers questions like that.

They lost me a little with the time travel stuff. I mean, okay, alternate timeline, I get what you were trying to say. But it was kind of an overpowering flavor for the rest of the story, it attached too much canon baggage. I think it would have been a better movie without Nimoy in it. (I also thought the whole concept of shooting Kirk at a remote planet instead of just locking him up severely strained believability, even in the context of a fantasy...)

The movie's at its best when it's just what it is, a riff on characters that we love. TOS was the start of fandom as we know it, it's the foundation of everything we do as modern makers of fanworks. I think this movie offers a very loving message to and about fandom, and I liked that.

As an aside, Sarek's scenes were bittersweet. I miss Mark Lenard.

After the movie we went to KFC, because it was the only place around still open. I officially gave up fast food like 10 years ago, but I'm not so anal about it that I'll refuse to eat if it's the only thing. That stuff sure tasted better when I was a little kid.

When I went to a basic account I made sure to keep my TAS icon! Which I suppose is rather appropriate to this movie. :)

I think that's why I'm in love with it. I'm probably going to see it for a fourth time tomorrow.

The guy they used for Sarek was ugly.

I loved the fandom in-jokes. I could have done with more McCoy myself but even though Urban did a good job it just didn't compare to De.

Nero *is* boring! Good point. He's pathetic without being interesting or pitiable at all. Especially for someone who is going to destroy Vulcan. You and what army?

I liked Ben Cross though. And I loved Karl Urban.
