Ye Olde Yuletide Rec Wagonne

As most of you already know, Yuletide's up, and there's a ton of good shit. To rec is irresistable! Here are ten fics in ten fandoms -- well, let's say ten source materials -- that I enjoyed, and hope you will too.

[EDIT: Actually, since one is a crossover, I guess it's eleven source materials. Well, whatever. THIS rec wagon goes to eleven.]


Peter Pan
Hook Or Me (PG-13) by unovis_lj
Whoa. One of those fics that just knocks you flat and makes you go yes yes of COURSE. I love it when fan authors do this -- take the existing allegorical framework and push it to its natural end, in this case applying it to the previous generation. Dovetails interestingly with the recent film, too, with Jason Isaacs playing the two roles...

Nip/Tuck
At the bottom of the kaleidoscope (PG-13) by glossing
There were several good Nip/Tuck fics in the fest, but this one stood out to me; I don't think I've ever read an Annie-centric fic before. The author really gets her age -- still childish, just the shaky first steps of an articulate mind. I like the tension between her innocence and her judgment, what she does and doesn't understand.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Last Man Standing (PG-13, Ford/Arthur) by jmtorres
Of the ten fics I'm reccing here, I'd say this is the only one that's "a slash story" -- that more or less fits into that format and those tropes. And that's not a bad thing! This is fun, funny, and really kind of sweet.

Absolutely Fabulous
Just Between Us (PG) by doyle_sb4
Lucky old mctabby! Spot-on pastiche, a real treat for those of us who miss the show.

Lost in Translation
Late (PG) by memorycharm
Oh my, yes. Captures Charlotte and the whole tone of the film perfectly. I like the interlocking levels of metatext, Charlotte watching Bob on TV, commenting on her very universe. LIT itself can comment on fandom too, I think... the space between seeing something on TV, and holding it in your hand.

Venture Brothers
Not Just Any Body (PG) by laurakaye
I can't say I expected to see this on the fandom list! I watch the show, but I kind of didn't think anyone else did. There are actually several VB fics in the fest, but I think this one is the funniest and best.

Dogma/Good Omens

I only know Good Omens from what I overhear in fandom, but the jist was enough for me to enjoy the heck out of this. Metatron is a delight.

Sweeney Todd

WORLD OF SQUEE. Okay, you have to understand that my love for Sweeney Todd knows no bounds, and this fic is GOOD. This is Mrs Lovett's casual disregard for men (Mr Such-and-So) -- but not casual, we realize here, very specific and ingrained. And her contempt for women too, and so thick with chatter and dire cheer that you don't see it until you're in knee-deep. Mystery author, you are my hero of the day!

Wind in the Willows

This story seems to break a cardinal rule of goodfic, in that it doesn't really go anywhere new. Yet, it's such a loving -- and prettily, honestly written -- tribute to Graehme's style, characters, and themes that I enjoyed revisiting the material. By the end, I felt warm and good (and a little teary, I don't mind admitting).

Jesus Christ Superstar (sort of... you'll see.)
I, Jehudah (PG-13) by Jay Tryfanstone
This isn't the kind of story you usually get in a fic exchange. As good as exchange fics can be, there's usually an underlying sense that the author is writing to spec, they wouldn't have done this on their own. Whoever wrote this story, it feels like they were born to write it. It doesn't fall easily into the usual fanfic categories -- not RPF, not FPF, not Biblefic -- only fanfic at all in the sense that it comments on prior texts. I don't know quite what to say to get you to try this story, because it's hard to tell you what you're going to get... Just click and have a taste.


Do not forget to praise ye olde yuletide authors, though anonymice they be.

I am so glad you liked my Sweeney Todd story. I wasn't sure it was going to work, as it was something of a departure from what I think of as my normal style. Your feedback was most heartening. I don't think I've ever heard the phrase "World of squee" before, but I treasure it. :)
