calling all DS9 fans :: drabble
Dec. 29th, 2003 09:03 pmI'm writing a TNG/DS9 crossover, and I'm much more of a TNG person than a DS9 person, so I need some help. Can anyone tell me what we know for sure about where Garak was and what he was doing before he came to Terok Nor? He was in the Obsidian Order working as an interrogator, and then he was exiled... why, exactly? I'm sure I've seen all the episodes, but it was an awfully long time ago.

Also, I posted an XF drabble, "While the Secretary", for the

Date: 2003-12-29 09:22 pm (UTC)Let's see... [gets out trusty Star Trek Encyclopaedia - yes, i have one of these. It was a present from an old boyfriend. Best thing he ever did for me]: Garak makes up a bunch of stories about his exile in "The Wire" but we're left not knowing if any of them are true. Garak's father, Enabran Tain, apparently gave the order to have Garak exiled and there are hints that Garak is still working for the Obsidian Order while still on DS9 (although he seems to desperately want to be accepted back in Cardassia so that seems odd) - it's possible there was some kind of father/ son rivalry going on and that's why Tain had him exiled - we never really learn.
I'm of the belief that Garak is one of Trek's greatest creations - he's complex, he's partially crazy and you never really find out whose side he's on. I think this gives you licence to do what you please with him. But if you have any more questions, well, there's my trusty Star Trek Encyclopaedia"...

Date: 2003-12-29 09:27 pm (UTC)I really thought there was something with Dukat's father? Garak and Dukat are arch-nemeses for some never-fully-explained reason, anyhow. But if the trusty Star Trek Encyclopaedia says Tain exiled Garak, I will absolutely stand by it.

Date: 2003-12-29 09:32 pm (UTC)Gee, I don't know - The trusty Star Trek Encyclopaedia says nothing about this and they wouldn't lie to me, would they?
And wasn't Garak porking Dukat's daughter at some stage?

Date: 2003-12-29 09:35 pm (UTC)Quite. This was before Dukat's second-in-command killed her, and Dukat went crazy, and then became, confusingly, PURE EEEEEVIL.
Dukat wasn't thrilled about Garak and Ziyal. This, of course, also had something to do with Dukat's mysterious father. I *swear.*

Date: 2003-12-29 09:45 pm (UTC)Maybe Dukat's father came up in one of the stories Garak told Bashir in "The Wire"? It's not mentioned in the TSTE (hmm... "testy") but, you know, not canon and all unless someone say it's TRUEFORSUREGODDAMMITITSREALTHISTIME.
Anyway, someone's father was involved. Possibly second-in-command-guy's.
Maggie, meet Hopey. Hopey, meet Maggie. *g*
I think they liiiiiiike each other...

Date: 2003-12-29 10:38 pm (UTC)This way of putting it caused me to laugh very loudly.
I did recall the whole Garak/Ziyal thing, which always seemed awfully peculiar to me. Smacked of plausible deniability, if you know what I mean. Or possibly Garak just trying to get under Dukat's skin, which wouldn't be very nice to Ziyal, who really just wanted to make friends and paint watercolors, if I recall correctly.

Date: 2003-12-30 01:53 pm (UTC)I'm pretty sure. I remember something Dukat fawning over her painting in an icky manner. Weyoun too.
no subject
Date: 2003-12-30 11:57 pm (UTC)She so did. And they were, to my estimation, lousy, though Trek would have us believe she won all sorts of awards.
Of course it's possible that, like Weyoun, I lack a sense of aesthetics. As he was the one who asked Kira, in regards to one of Ziyal's paintings: "would this be more aesthetically pleasing...if it were blue?"

Date: 2003-12-30 11:59 pm (UTC)You know, for people who lacked a sense of aesthetics, the Vorta were pretty snappy dressers. Maybe the Founders provided makeovers.

Date: 2003-12-29 09:25 pm (UTC)Garak remains a mystery, of course, right through the end of the series, so you should feel utterly at ease not specifying the details of his exile.
One thing to remember is he worked for Enabran Tain, a higher-up in the Obsidian Order, who proved later to be Garak's father, and died in the Dominion prison camp.
It also might be helpful to know that Garak's first name is Elim.
And that he's profoundly obsessed with one Julian Bashir and will take any opportunity presented to throw said Bashir up against the wall and have his way with him.
Then again, that might not be helpful at all. *g*
Mm! DS9 fic!

Date: 2003-12-29 10:41 pm (UTC)That's all I needed to hear -- as long as I'm not violating specific canon, I think I'm good.
It also might be helpful to know that Garak's first name is Elim.
I knew that, but under what circumstances do Cardassians use their first names?
And that he's profoundly obsessed with one Julian Bashir and will take any opportunity presented to throw said Bashir up against the wall and have his way with him.
This is indubitably the case, but my fic takes place before they met. It's actually... don't laugh, but it's Garak/Data.

Date: 2003-12-29 11:52 pm (UTC)Really! It's called (I think!) "A Far, Far Better Thing" and I didn't even know it was still up anywhere. DS9 was my First Fandom; that was a long time ago when I was just a wee ficlet. *g*
I'll bet it could stand up to a rewrite, though...
Thanks so much for the compliment, and even more so for *remembering* that story, and me, from so long back.
(Oh, hey, look! Here it is, (http://www.grapefruithead.com/ourboys/sabine/affbt.txt) and I was right about the title after all. *g*)

Date: 2003-12-30 12:23 am (UTC)Garak and Gul Dukat intrigued the hell out of me. I wonder if that is why I am drawn to the Snape character? You just never knew what their motivations quite were, or whose allegiance they were behind.
That first episode, where we were first introduced to Garak (by lunching with the doctor) still rates as rather striking for televison, at the time that I saw it. What the hell was Andrew Robinson thinking? More importantly, why didn't the writers let him continue with it?!

Date: 2003-12-30 01:54 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm definitely drawn to shady motivations. Same thing with Krycek, and Peter to some extent.

Date: 2003-12-30 02:02 pm (UTC)So clean scrubbed when we meet him, and then he's a Ratboy with one arm, but is he really? Gosh, a fascinating character.
