Yes, my last post was also squeeing over a gift fic. Here is another. They are both well deserved.

Would you believe, for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen (masterlist), I actually got fic for Topsy-Turvy, a fandom so obscure that up until now it had zero fics of any kind, even in Yuletide? And would you believe that it is about my two favorite characters, and that it is so amazing I almost died of happiness? BELIEVE IT.

are you in a sentimental mood? (Teen, Jessie Bond/Leonora Braham) by [personal profile] aphrodite_mine

If you've seen the movie, go read this fic. If you haven't seen the movie, go Netflix it and then read this fic. The story is brilliant in all the same ways the movie is, and then some. It's sad and real and subtle and hopeful, and beautifully subverts our expectations of Victorian women and their lives. If we only get one fic to represent this rich source material, I am so glad it's this one.

Meanwhile, I wrote a ST:TNG fic for [personal profile] oparu:

The New Water (Teen, Beverly Crusher/Deanna Troi) by me

The only character I offered in this fandom was Kate Pulaski, not because I didn't like the other choices but because I hadn't watched the show in a long time and I knew she was only in season 2. So when this was my assignment, I dutifully reviewed the relevant eps and started to write, but somehow it just. wasn't. working. My recipient also asked for Beverly/Deanna, which I had never really thought about before (TNG is the fandom of my childhood, so pairing up the characters still feels a little scandalous), but an idea for that popped into my head and the whole thing was written and finished in the week before the due date. Woo. I'd still like to write the Pulaski fic because I like the character and think she is unfairly maligned, so maybe someday!

This was the first year for this fest and it seemed there were a few hiccups with communication of the rules and figuring out how posting would work, but overall I thought it was quite fun. I think a fest like this was greatly needed — I love the concept of focusing both on women from small fandoms, and women who are rare within their own big fandoms — and if it continues to run in future years (as I hope it will), the execution will only get smoother.
