Both [livejournal.com profile] nearlyconscious and [personal profile] delphi were very eager to hear about my favorite sandwiches. Naturally this comes up on a day when I have no bread in the house. Nonetheless, I will soldier on. Here are my top five sandwiches, in reverse order for increased dramatic tension.

5. Almond Butter and Honey
The only reason this isn't higher up is that it drives me crazy how the honey drips everywhere. But it is a taste sensation. I don't really like peanut butter much; it always feels like it wants to beat me over the head with its peanut-itude. Almond butter is a mellower pairing for the honey. Toasted bread, of course, is a must.

4. Black Bean Patty
This makes it onto the list because I was once scolded by a guildmate for referring to these as burgers, when of course they are sandwiches because burgers have to contain meat. I'm not sure why this was so important to him, but I let him have his way, and now I get to put this tasty whatever-you-call-it on my list! I guess it all worked out for the best. I usually keep a few ready-made in the freezer.

3. Cream Cheese and Blueberry Jam
This is my go-to for when I want a sandwich but I don't want to exert any effort or get any honey on myself. There are more delicious sandwiches to be had, but this one's ratio of deliciousness to effort is second to none. I used to have it with strawberry jam when I was a kid, but I've developed a sensitivity to strawberries in adulthood, so it's blueberry now.

2. Avocado, Swiss, Cucumber, and Alfalfa Sprouts
Since I moved away from the restaurant where I used to get this, I'm now reduced to recreating it myself, and don't think I don't complain about it. I rarely make it because I'm the only one in my house who will eat sprouts, and because the moderate amount of effort required to assemble the necessary ingredients can be lethal to Immediate Sandwich Desires. Unless you happen to have an avocado that's already perfectly ripened at the moment you decide you want the sandwich, forget about it. Note that you need a good quality, crusty, chewy, tasty roll to make it properly; regular bread is incapable of containing the awesomeness.

...and in the top spot... drumroll...

1. Grilled Cheese
I have a love-hate relationship with grilled cheese, because the amount of time it takes to grill usually exceeds my attention span, so I wander off for a minute and when I come back I've blackened the thing. But when that doesn't happen... oh the golden wonderment of a perfectly done grilled cheese. (The best grilled cheese, of course, is the one someone else makes for you.)

And now, time to go grocery shopping.

You can still give me questions/topics on LJ and DW.

You know, I just love that you made a list, and a post especially for it.

I adore avocado :)

Are you a vegetarian?

Avocado is the best!

Yes, I'm basically vegetarian, though I do make occasional exceptions. My mom was a vegetarian and raised us that way, so eating meat still feels somewhat foreign to me.

I agree ^_^

Right! My parents are not vegetarian, but my sister is a pescetarian; when we were younger, she was basically a vegetarian. Since she was my big sister I'd do everything like her, haha... So I didn't eat meat, poultry nor fish for years. Now I like it, but I never cook it for myself, buy it... I only have it sometimes in restaurants, and when others cook for me. But I can never eat A LOT of it -- not used to it.

Yeah, if I eat a lot of meat it doesn't sit well with me either. My brother has noticed the same, though he gave up on being veg years ago. It took a long time for his body to get used to eating meat since we grew up without it.

Black Bean Patty is the name of my Rolling Stones cover band.

I suppose the name would have to have some filthy and possibly apocryphal connotation (cf. Brown Eyed Girl).

I'm the perfect grilled cheese minion because I don't like grilled cheese. But I love quesadillas which have the same attention span issues.

Mmm, quesadillas. For some reason I don't get as impatient when I make those. Maybe it's because I can busy myself looking for the sour cream while they're cooking.
