Well, the good(?) news is that even though you stopped watching in 2008, the production schedule has been so erratic that there have only been twenty-some episodes since then, so catching up actually wouldn't be hard. And you're right that it has gotten much more arc-y, so you'd be pretty lost if you jumped back in without catching up. Not that you'd want to miss any of the eps! It's a great show and has only gotten better IMO.
