I hear you. Especially when you don't have a formal teacher. No one wants to practice incorrectly! I think that fear of making mistakes is part of why we have more trouble as adults. Kids have no self-consciousness about trying out new words and phrases. (Often to their parents' chagrin, LOL.)
Same here. I can't speak French at all, but I can almost read it because it's so similar to Spanish and Italian.
