If he knew Tonks through Sirius, wouldn't have dropped out of her life a long time ago? Like, when Sirius went to Azkaban?
Why would that have happened? Just because you meet people through someone doesn't mean your relationship with them is dependent upon the initial relationship. I have a series of fanfics about the Dora/Lupin relationship as it develops over the years... so far, no one's said, "Wow, that's totally impossible!"
