Yet more conlang/fandom madness.

Réé ongow Réylún: Lál úmúúng ngiá
"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"

Réé "sea" - pictogram

ongow "west" = phonetic ngéR "slime" + determinative "sun".

Réylún "pirates" is a transparent derivation. réylú "pirate" = réal "sailing vessel" + animate taker: one who steals sailing ships, a ship-taker. Réylún is the plural.

Lál "pearl" - pictogram

úmúúng "black" is an unusual double-determinative in the written form, "night" + "eye".

ngiá "curse" = phonetic ngýá "snake" + determinative "fire" (fire determines a number of magical words).

The Luen don't have our concept of the romantic pirate archetype, so that element of the PotC story would seem very odd to them.

However, the cursed pirates would put a Lue in mind of angaúL people -- those who are "dry", soulless. The easiest way to become angaúL is by murder, not greed, but the symptoms aren't dissimilar. angaúL people thirst constantly, can't die (per se, but that's complicated), can't experience sexual release, and are rotten on the inside -- their blood and tears are stagnant water. There's an interesting episode in an Amiu novel where a murderer urinates at the base of a tree, and the tree is later observed to have shriveled and died in the space of a few hours.

The "moonlight revelation" might make sense to the Luen. In their tradition, it's the new moon rather than the full moon that's associated with supernatural events -- the moon is a powerful protector, so bad things tend to happen when it's not looking. But since the moon does have that protector status, they might see it as the moon attempting to aid the protagonists by showing the murderous pirates for what they really are.

I love, love, love this piece. The fandom needs much more Tim Burton-esque creepyhumor.

Go now!

Also, I almost posted this myself, but [livejournal.com profile] chresimos beat me. Check out the second half of her post for elite AIM Peter discussion. Hem.

Hi there, it's Juxian! I'm sorry for being so OT but I thought it might be the fastest way to contact you. I had that awful thing with Geocities closing my site - and now I'm trying to restore it on Slashcity but I have lost many, many files. Would you please, please send me 'Cut with Diamonds' so that I could put it there - or if you have it archived somewhere and want it to look that way, would you send me the link please?

My address is juxiantang@hotmail.com

Thank you once more!!!

Always nice to see some more Amiu stuff. I saw it and thought, yay, I recognize that, for it is indeed a BOAT pictogram! and was inappropriately pleased.
