I recently changed my userinfo to mention that I'm an INFP, which is really a very accurate description of my personality. Quite often, I find myself wanting to explain my actions by saying "it's an INFP thing".

So, in the interest of fostering understanding (and that's an INFP thing), I've put together a poll. I added the Hogwarts question on a whim; if a lot of people respond, I'll collate the two and see if the same types end up in the same houses.

If you don't know your type, there are tests here and here.

EDIT: For collating the results, I'll use all responses received within 72 hours. (That means before 10:30am Pacific Time on Tuesday, 3/23.) If you show up after that, feel free to take the survey anyway; it's just that there's a limit to how much data I can process.

EDIT2: The 72 hours are up. You're still welcome to take the survey, of course. The last respondent to make it in under the wire was [livejournal.com profile] izmeina. I'll let [livejournal.com profile] quickquote know when the results are prepared.

EDIT3: The results are here.

[Poll #265921]

What a fascinating poll. Finally, we get to see if House sortings correlate with M-B types. *g* Although most of around here appear to be Ravenclaws...

the final results will be interesting. I tried the test twice, trying to be honest both times but obviously one or two answers were a wee bit different - the results couldn't decide between Extroverted or Introverted! But I can definitely answer for Slytherin - I'm always sorted there!

Heh, three-quarters of my flist at least claim to be Slytherins, so seeing so many Ravenclaws is very strange! I am only just over the edge on ENFP, it has reduced with age, I slide more towards INFP every time...

That's interesting; I sometimes tested ENFP when I was younger. The I-E spectrum is difficult to devise good questions for, I think, because how "outgoing" you are depends on what kind of social life you have at the time you take the test. If you're surrounded by people you don't know or don't like, your score is bound to skew I.

From: [identity profile] fluffyllama.livejournal.com
Yes I think that might account for the skewing. I most recently score a whole 1 on extrovert, so it's so borderline it's insane, and yet the ENFP descriptions are the only ones that fit, and I've never gone over the line into INFP.

The line from http://keirsey.com/pygmalion/advocates.html makes me giggle the most, I'd lost this link. Quote: "At times, Advocates will champion a cause with such zeal that they can be carried away with the rightness of their position"

Um yes. The time I set my dad's newspaper on fire while he was reading it sort of springs to mind ;-) And I still believe it was perfectly justifed *g*

I chose INTJ as that's what I've come out as several times, but I seem to float between that and INTP, INFJ, INFP. I also selected Ravenclaw, but I might make Hufflepuff as well. I'm blurry that way. : ) I imagine a lot of us are.

Neat poll!

Just took another M-B test, and lo and behold, registered as ISTJ. That's a new one, but seems appropriate too.

Now the day I ever end up with an E is when I'll have to do some hard thinking.

I chose INTP because that's what I get most often, but my P/J ratio is something like 60/40, so I often come up INTJ, depending on the individual test.  I like the poll, though.  :-)

From: [identity profile] aristide.livejournal.com
I put down INTP for mine, as its what I get most often, Fallowed by INTJ. My trouble stemmed from the Hogwarts houses though, as I've been sorted into Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin in varying intervals. However, I put Hufflepuff down as I've been getting it the most recently.

INFP, close to INTP here. My initially sky-high I/E score has gradually crept towards the 60-70 range, so I must be getting more sociable as age mellows me. And I was sorted as Gryffindor, I suspect primarily because I'm even more unfit for any of the others. *g*

Your passion for lovely detail comes through in your fiction and your journal entries (the way you talk about your physical surroundings), and strikes me as very INFP. The typelogic.com description notes that INFPs like to paint word pictures, which is certainly true for both of us.

From: [identity profile] spican.livejournal.com
Thanks -- it really is a passion, you know. :) I did recognize both of us in that aspect of how we use language, and I definitely identify with the "looking-glass" view of the world and, less positively, the uncertainty around context and proportion, which often tends to trouble or puzzle me. I tend to be anxious about my own judgment of situations and second-guess myself a lot.

I am not sure how accurately I sort on these tests -- IN is consistent, but the other two are subject to variation. The one that matched them to HP characters said I was INFP; I USED to come up INTP pretty often, but tonight's came up INFJ.

And I would love to find a House sorter that I couldn't game for whatever result I wanted to get, really. But I feel comfortable with Ravenclaws.

What's with all the INTPs and Ravenclaws?

I'm borderline INTP (INTJ at work) and sort Hufflepuff when I don't sort Ravenclaw. Interesting that there aren't more Gryffindors, though.

I love the fact that the INFP description is filled with quotes. Moby Dick! The Velveteen Rabbit!!!!! <3 ISHMAEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! *brings self under control* Right. Sorry. Ishmael is one of my favourite characters ever... Moby Dick, what the fuck.

I'm INTP, and I find the description almost distrurbingly accurate. Borderline ISTP, but that description doesn't fit me at all, so there you go... 'A major concern for INTPs is the haunting sense of impending failure.' Thanks a lot, Joe Butt. Nice to know that's going to be stuck with me forever... But I know exactly what you mean. Take out the love of complicated games (games don't interest me) and I feel I should keep that page as a manual for anyone who wants to interact with me. No, it's nothing personal when I space out in your company. Yes, I'm always this indecisive... It's an INTP thing. >:}

The INFP description should be mandatory reading for anyone who interacts with me. Maybe then people will believe me when I say I'm not interested in debating them, I just want to hear what they have to say -- that's an end in itself.

A major concern for INTPs is the haunting sense of impending failure

Last night I was talking with another of my INTP friends about this. INTPs and INFPs both worry about failure, but while INTPs are concerned with actual, factual failure, INFPs are focused on ethical failings -- that's what's most real to us. The actual outcome is less important than the *way* a task was conducted. If something goes really wrong for an INFP, we can get over it as long as we know we did the right thing. That doesn't make as much difference to an INTP.

The INFP way can seem maddening to other types. "Oh, so it's all fucked up, but *you* did the ethical thing. That makes it *so* much better!"

Date: 2004-03-22 12:53 pm (UTC)

>:}

Ethics....... that word really isn't in my vocabulary. Right and wrong... I don't operate so much on a gray-scale as a RGB spectrum. It's part of the reason why Lupin gives me so much trouble. His actions bother me because they cause pain for others whom I sympathize with, but from his own point of view... They make sense.

My sense of failure... I hate depending on people. I hate being a nuisance. I get so annoyed at other people; I just apply that same lack of consideration to others. >:} And the fact that, as an INTP, I'm so detached and analytical I rarely give any kind of shit about what others deem important (eg, college degree) except on a purely intellectual level... But then when I do care about something (*coughfictionalwerewolves*) I'm absolutely obsessed... And that in itself carries a sense of failure. What impact, after all, does a fictional werewolf really have on my life??? Am I just seeking an escape from my real responsibilities? And why are they my responsibilities, anyway? What can I learn from myself in this situation? How can I apply it to my future??? And depending on my mood, I emerge blithe and fancy-free or.... quivering in a lump of fear at the afore-mentioned impeding doom....

Life. Gotta love it. :} So when I've worked myself into a state of depression, flipping burgers for a living, and am forced to survive once more on the guilt-purchased charity of my parents... you can tell me I followed my heart? :}

I just took both versions of the test for Snape. He came out as an INTJ each time.

And a Slytherin, surprisingly. *g*

BTW...one of the things I found very interesting about the poll results so far is how *few* people come out as anything beginning with an "E." The only E-type that has had more than 2 results (so far) was ENFP (my result)...and three of those people, I think, sorted as Gryffindor.

I noticed there were very few E's when the test went round before, the HP character version. Before that I'd have said it was a stereotype that most writers were introverts, but seems I'd have been wrong...

Fascinating poll here!

I'm most definitely an INFP (usually scoring in the extreme INFP corner *grin*) and I'm very much a Slytherin as well. I'd be greatly interested in finding out if there's a correlation of any sort between the Houses and personality types.

I picked INTP, but I'm near 50/50 on the P/J spectrum, and can test either way on any given day.

In fact, I just went and took it, and scored INTJ today.

I'm also a Slytherclaw, leaning slightly more towards Slytherin than Ravenclaw, but it is a bit of a toss-up.

Hi, I came here through [livejournal.com profile] quickquote.

I have the same situation as [livejournal.com profile] ladysorka. I'm either an INTP or an INTJ, as I'm tied in the P/J scale. I picked INTP for this poll.

I too consider myself to be a Slythenclaw, but I'd choose Slytherin over Ravenclaw, which is why I picked Slytherin.

Definitely ISFJ here, picked Hufflepuff because it's where I think I fit best, though I'm sometimes placed in Ravenclaw and once in a while in Gryffindor - never Slytherin. Honestly, I find most HP quizzes to be really bad there, so I just went with what I think is best for me.

I'm an INTJ (repeated testing, not even close to any borders), but I think I'd end up Gryffindor by default--I don't have the attention to school-work detail it would take to be a Ravenclaw, definitely don't have Hufflepuff teamwork going on, and Slyth-wise... well, I'm pretty brutal about whether or not some strategy works, which would suggest Slytherin, but that "N" tends to make me very opinionated about what's right or wrong, which doesn't tend to fit Slyth.

I'm surprised to see so many INFP's; it seems like most of the people I associate with are introverts of various other types. I chose Ravenclaw because I usually sort there, test close to 50/50 on F/T and P/J, and identify vaguely with Luna Lovegood. I've never found a house-sorting test that I was really satisfied with, though.

A lot of the early data came from people on my friends list, so it's perhaps less odd to see so many INFPs -- like may attract like. People I meet and immediately take to often turn out to be the same type as myself.

I am borderline INFJ/INFP and Ravenclaw/Gryffindor.
I claim INFJ & Ravenclaw a)because that's where I'm placed 51% of the time and b)I identify more with Luna, the Gryffindorish Ravenclaw, than I do with Hermione, the Ravenclawish Gryffindor.

So far, just glancing at the raw data, the most interesting thing that just jumps out is the high percentage of INTx, followed by INxx. And what that says about the populations of fandom and live journal users. And the percentage correlation between those types and Ravenclaw. It will be interesting to see what the actual type/house correlation ends up being.

I am shocked, SHOCKED! There are so many INTP's. No wonder I have found a home here in the Harry Potter fandom.

I would imagine the house break downs would go along the Keirsey temperments if there were enough data points: NT's (rationals) in Ravenclaw (hence so many Ravenclaws), SP's (artisans) in Slytherin, SJ's *cringe* (guardians) in Hufflepuff and NF's (idealists) in Griffindor.

The problem is that with MB, you do have a spectrum. I am definately an INTP, but have some ISTP and INFP leanings. If I am anything, it is definately P.

If I'd had to pick temperaments for the four houses, I'd have gone with NT-Slytherin, SP-Gryffindor, SJ-Ravenclaw, NF-Hufflepuff. It looks like that doesn't fit the data, though.

I think it's okay to be a lazy Ravenclaw (I'm one). To me, Ravenclaw means that you value knowledge for its own sake, which I definitely do.

I find this especially interesting, given that INTPs are actually only 1% of the general population. Way to go, guys!

And I'm almost as much Gryffindor as Ravenclaw...no guts, but the same ethics, I suppose.
