[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen posting day is here!

I didn't sign up this year because I "didn't have time", and I also assured myself I wasn't going to be pinch hitting, and was only reading the emails from the pinch hitter mailing list out of curiosity.

That said, I wrote this pinch hit for [livejournal.com profile] jacquelee:

The Telling Stone (ST:TNG, Teen, Guinan/Ro Laren)
Guinan's father lives at the straggling edge of the Alpha Quadrant, as far as he can get from the remains of their homeworld without leaving the galaxy, on a lonely desert moon.

And now to read stuff. :D

new HP fic

April's [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant challenge was to make something based on a piece previously posted to the community. I chose to write about [personal profile] osmalic's art piece A Good Big Brother Always Shares (NSFW), though it turned out sort of... different than I expected.

The Lion's Share (NC-17, Regulus/Sirius[?]) [AO3]
Regulus knows he's not allowed in his brother's room, but something keeps him coming back.
content: underage sexuality, incest fantasy

In other news, one of my RAM sticks has gone bad! Yay! I expect the computer will continue limping along well enough until the replacements get here (the symptom is sporadic freezes), but still not something I'm happy about. I just hope it's that the stick was faulty to start with, rather than there being something else wrong that killed the RAM. It's not overheating inside the case or anything, so, fingers crossed.

new HP fic

One of my favorite things in the world is to take a cracky-sounding premise and play it absolutely straight, so when I saw that the randomly-generated alternative pairing for [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant in February was Aberforth/Millicent, well... I knew what I had to do.

Opposite Ends (NC-17, Aberforth/Millicent) [AO3]
She thought she'd feel different after they'd fucked. He's lived long enough to know that he wouldn't.

Definitely one of those where I looked at the finished fic and was thinking "is anyone going to want to read this?" so I'm really pleased that it went over well. It was a stretch in some ways — I've actually never written either character before — but once I knew what I wanted to do with it, it came out surprisingly easily.

Oh, and happy slightly-belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ragdoll and [personal profile] hannelore, two lovely Pisces. ♥

Yeah, this was the daily posting meme from last month. I'm... not very good at this.

Anyway, [personal profile] hannelore asked: What advice would you give someone who wants to write in a fandom that they've never written in before?

Well, the first bit of advice I'd give is the same advice that's been given about internet communities since they've existed: Lurk first.

Fandoms can have surprisingly divergent cultural norms. What kind of header information is standard in your new fandom? What are the expectations about giving and responding to feedback? Which characters and tropes are loved, hated, or controversial? You don't have to write only what readers want to hear, but if what you plan to write is not what everyone else is writing, you might want to know that going in so you're not surprised by the reaction.

My other advice would be the flip side of that: Hang onto what makes your perspective unique. In well-established fandoms there is a tendency for people's viewpoints to converge over time, which is a natural process in any social group; we talk to each other and consider each other's opinions, and that's how those fandom norms take shape. This is not in itself a bad thing (and it's unavoidable, anyway) but sometimes it can lead writers to try too hard to adhere to what they see as the norm, with the result being a lot of stories that all sound the same.

When I first got started in fandom, for a while I would refuse to read fics with the same characters or themes as what I was working on, because I didn't want to be influenced by other writers' interpretations. Now I see this as the extremism of a much younger me. As a writer, you really need to read what your peers are producing. No piece of writing exists in a vacuum, and you can be sure it won't be read in one. Your stories can be both part of the growing body of work that the fandom creates, and an expression of your own voice. It's just a matter of being aware of your influences, and being intentional about using them or discarding them.

No fic is an island, I guess, is the short version.

It's 15 days too late for this, which is just about how behind I am on everything else at this point, so at least I'm consistent? /o\

I wrote a lot of fic this past year, mostly for fests. Well... all for fests, actually, or at least for things with deadlines. Not coincidental, that. Towards the end of the year I bit off more than I could chew and did have to drop out of one fest, which was a first for me, and a bummer. Next year, more realistic scheduling! But according to AO3, I wrote about 30,000 words in 2013, which is a bit more than in any past year, including years in which my fandoms were much more active.

Harry Potter )

Star Trek )

Warcraft )

I'm going to be bold and say that most of these were solid stories that I'm proud of. It was flattering and encouraging this year to be invited to write at [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant and to win/place in a couple of categories at [livejournal.com profile] hpfanficfanpoll. I hope this doesn't sound stupid or vain, but what I really want out of writing is to give other people enjoyment, and when I meet that goal it makes me happy.

Onward!

Oh man, I haven't posted in a while, have I? Real life was doing a number on me, not in a bad way, just in a busy way. I am going to get to all those December meme prompts, too, but first... the Kinky Kristmas reveals post is up at [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant, so I can say that I wrote this, to [personal profile] songquake's delicious prompts:

Pomona Sprout and the Five Points from Hufflepuff [AO3]
(NC-17, school-age-but-probably-legal Pomona/Minerva, kinks including tickling, teasing, and embarrassment)

Speaking of which, I found an embarrassment of riches in my [community profile] fandom_stocking! There seems to be a glitch right now where I can't comment there without it being screened, but rest assured I love my gifts and deeply appreciate everyone who took the time to make something for me, including but not limited to:

- State-Transition Function by [personal profile] sineala (ST:TOS, Uhura gen with linguistics!)
- Your Move by [personal profile] moontyger (WoW, Anduin/Wrathion with UST!)
- For the Horde by [personal profile] hannelore (WoW, Thrall & Vol'jin gen with barely-subtextual D/s!)
- An Introduction by [personal profile] smallbrownfrog (HP, Luna/Minerva pre-femslash with Gilbert & Sullivan references!)
- Outstanding by [personal profile] chokolattejedi (HP, Hermione/Septima with power play!)
- Krycek and Scully art from [personal profile] ani_bester and another Krycek art from [personal profile] tarlanx! *rolls around in XF nostalgia*
- Uhura art from [personal profile] trobadora! Uhura! ♥♥♥

I really meant to do all kinds of things for this fest, but what actually happened was I signed up for it and then promptly forgot about it until the deadline had, in fact, passed. I suck, I know. Next year I'll do better. But due to the technical problems that delayed the fest going live, I managed a few icons for people, at least, and one ficlet, which is so tailored to [personal profile] hannelore's interests that it might be incomprehensible to anyone else, but here it is anyway:

The Terrible Secret of Warsong Gulch
(G, Venture Bros., 21 & 24 friendship)

Well, the master list is up and another year of [insanejournal.com profile] hp_beholder is at an end. My lovely gift was written by [livejournal.com profile] chaos_rose, and I've added author names to my post of other recs.

I wrote:

Triptych on the Sword of Ragnuk (R, Flitwick/Griphook) [LJ - AO3]
Summary: The beauty of a man may bring pleasure for an hour, but the beauty of a blade is eternal.

I've always been curious about the goblins in HP and their place in magical society, and felt it was a loose end after Book 7. The whole plot thread about the sword, and the open mistrust and easy betrayal on both sides made me want to dig deeper. I offered Griphook hoping I'd get a chance to write about that, and [livejournal.com profile] smallbrownfrog's prompts ended up being exactly in line with what I was already thinking about. I hadn't offered Flitwick, but her request for him reminded me that he's supposed to be part goblin, and that goblins legally can't even use wands (let alone teach how to use them), and how much of a loose end that is!

I wasn't sure how it would go over, since I have to figure not everyone finds Griphook as magnetic a character as I do :P, and I was glad to see people got what I was going for and appreciated it.

Yay like-minded people! Yay Beholder! :D

I received an excellent gift:
Pictures in the Pavement and Magic in the Rain by [personal profile] el_staplador (G, Mary Poppins, ft. Mary, Jane, Winifred, & the Bird Woman)
It shows us more of the lives and relationships of the women in this movie in a wonderfully believable and satisfying way. It's everything I was hoping for when I asked for this fandom. You should read it!

I got matched with [personal profile] hannelore, which I knew was a possibility (it's not my fault we have similar tastes) but this year I just figured if it happens, let it happen. For her I wrote:
Deep Breath (Teen, World of Warcraft, ft. Onyxia & Lilian Voss)

Such enormity moving with such grace (G, ST:TOS, ft. Gillian Taylor)
And I wrote a treat for [livejournal.com profile] dropsofviolet:
The Thrill of the Hunt (G, ST:TNG, ft. Tasha Yar)
I'm looking forward to combing through the rest. There are some stories that look amazing from the summaries, it's just a matter of finding time to sit down and read. D:

Yes, my last post was also squeeing over a gift fic. Here is another. They are both well deserved.

Would you believe, for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen (masterlist), I actually got fic for Topsy-Turvy, a fandom so obscure that up until now it had zero fics of any kind, even in Yuletide? And would you believe that it is about my two favorite characters, and that it is so amazing I almost died of happiness? BELIEVE IT.

are you in a sentimental mood? (Teen, Jessie Bond/Leonora Braham) by [personal profile] aphrodite_mine

If you've seen the movie, go read this fic. If you haven't seen the movie, go Netflix it and then read this fic. The story is brilliant in all the same ways the movie is, and then some. It's sad and real and subtle and hopeful, and beautifully subverts our expectations of Victorian women and their lives. If we only get one fic to represent this rich source material, I am so glad it's this one.

Meanwhile, I wrote a ST:TNG fic for [personal profile] oparu:

The New Water (Teen, Beverly Crusher/Deanna Troi) by me

New HP fic

Two Februaries (1328 words) by faviconpauraque
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Cho Chang/Harry Potter
Summary: The second time Harry and Cho sit down together on Valentine's Day is twenty-five years after the first.

Hey, look, it's my first HP fic in a couple of years[1]! When [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss mentioned she liked Harry/Cho, I had a vague idea of writing some for her, and when I saw on the Lexicon that JKR had mentioned Cho married a Muggle, this all popped into my head fully-formed.

How do you guys feel about links to AO3? Do you click on them, or are you more likely to read something if it's here (DW/LJ)? I know for me, for a while I didn't really know what AO3 was and when I clicked on links I was like, wait, where are you taking me, I don't want to go to some other site, backbutton! But maybe it was just me. I see people doing different things in terms of where they're posting, so I'm not sure what the typical way is these days.

[1] Strictly speaking, there was my [livejournal.com profile] wizard_love fic before this, but I can't show you that yet. [livejournal.com profile] wizard_love's started posting, by the way!

I received a request to repost this fic, because as with quite a few of my HP stories, it was never posted anywhere but [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies, which is of course closed. When I get some time I will probably put them all up somewhere. It was never my intention to disappear them from the 'tubes; I'm just lazy and no longer active in the fandom. (Every time I get one of these requests it becomes more and more shocking to me how much time has passed.)
